Dakar, Jan. 5-17, 2020, Saudi Arabia ... ** Spoiler alert**

nice post re: the importance of family for many racers who go on to be champions ...

Toby Price is a champion of a human being - no small part due to his champion pair of parents...

Pauline and John are absolute salt of the earth, lovely rural Australian people.

That's why Tobe's is the grounded, grass roots, likeable, approachable unassuming champion of a person that he is... his phenomenal abilities on a bike or in a truck are just a bonus.

Go champ! :hail

oh well, apparently I must repost this every year, since I'm an idjit:

It's the 1988 DAF 95 Turbotwin X1. After winning the 1987 Paris-Dakar rally with its 1,000+ hp "Turbotwin II," the Dutch truckmaker (and Dakar-trucking mastermind and driver Jan de Rooy) returned in 1988 with the gorillashit-insane X1. How do you make an 11-ton truck go 150 mph?

Two 11.6-liter diesel engines, each fed by three turbochargers, producing 1,200 horsepower and a space-time-ripping 3,466 lb-ft of torque. EACH. That's 2,400 hp and near-as-dirt 7,000 lb-ft.

It also had a lightweight aluminum spaceframe, which counteracted the weight of all that mid-mounted diesel powah.

re: Mr. Stearns: had a huge blood transfusion in the early '80s, myself ... guess he was 26 y/o, so random ... :rose

we'll be racing shortly:

Eyes on the ball:
Reduced to a length of 166 km, the last special is no ticker-tape parade. Although Ricky Brabec can afford to conserve his bike and ride at 80% to claim his first Dakar, it would be foolish for him to let his guard down, knowing that his rivals will come out with all guns blazing with only five minutes separating fourth and seventh place overall. Pablo Quintanilla will be opening the track with an eight-minute margin over Toby Price in the fight for the second step on the podium.
