The ladies rocked the Dakar Rally this year! 5 starters on bikes, and all 5 finished. This is the final standings for the Women's Class...
Laia Sanz, who is pretty much in a class by herself, finished a solid 1st. This is her 10th finish in her 10th straight Dakar Rally. Paulo Goncalves's death was extremely difficult on her, and I think she rode the last 4 stages in survival mode. Her boyfriend was riding the Dakar for the first time, as well (he was the highest finishing rookie this year,) and she said she didn't like it...it made her nervous. No idea what her contract looks like, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see her (and Toby) on 4 wheels next year...
Mirjam Pol tore a muscle in her thigh a few days before the finish, and was also one of the first on scene when Edwin Straver had his horrific crash. She spent a few years as Paulo’s teammate (as a rider and team manager) and his death rocked her to her core. Even though, this was her 7th Dakar and her best overall result...
Kirsten Landman, a Hard Enduro rider and vociferous advocate for animals, had a very consistent race. I look for her to be much higher up in the standings next year...
Same with Taye Perry, all 5’2” of her. She had a stellar debut going, giving the very experienced Mirjam a run for her money. She ran into some issues and had an 18-hour day on Stage 11 the day before the final stage, being towed in the dunes and pushing her bike into the bivouac by herself at almost midnight. She smiled through it all, and I’m looking forward to watching her next year...
Sara Garcia rode the Malle Moto (unassisted) class with her boyfriend. Last year’s attempt saw her crash out. This year she finished with a minimum amount of drama. Nicely done, gals!
Overall positions:
18th Laia Sanz
41st Mirjam Pol
55th Kirsten Landman
77th Taye Perry
86th Sara Garcia
