BT headsets?

My bike has bluetooth connectivity and allows me to answer calls, and control music from my phone on the dash.

I've never had any type of headset in all my years of riding. I know Sena is heavily favored.

Just need something reliable, and not too cumbersome. My primary lid is an Arai XD4.

Prefer something under $500.

Thanks!

I think you answered your own question.

FWIW, I have a scala g9x on my xd4. I have so many dislikes with it from the voice command to the auto adjusting volume. but I went all in when I purchased it and got the dual set for me and the wifey so I’m kinda stuck with it.

Also, I’ve never tried to pair my headset with my bike I can only imagine the headache of trying to do so.

The Sena 10R is a low profile and works well. I had an older model SMH10R and sold it to get the new Sena 30K. The only advantage of the 30K for me it the noise reduction when I talk to the wife on the phone. She does not know I am riding when I answer the call. Hope your KTM Bluetooth is better than my Ducati. I run my phone and Sena through my Garmin works well.

I have the Cards Scala Freecom 4 but the new Packtalk Slim looks super good too, they allow you to use their speakers or your own earbuds (or custom earplug headsets like I have...)

They are IPX rated for water and dust too.

Highly recommended....

I paired my phone and some generic BT headsets to the bike and it worked great! Just looking for something more MC specific and mounted on the helmet.

Maybe it's just me, but my SENA speakers blew out kinda early. I'm looking to upgrade the in-helmet speakers only if I can.

I've had the Cardo Scala G9 for the longest time, and it's been good. Now, I have a Schuberth helmet, and use the Schuberth specific version of the Cardo... I don't typically answer or make calls while on the bike, but it's very handy for GPS directions either from my GPS or my phone... :)

I've got an SMH-5 and it's worked great for something like 6 years now. It's simple but effective, and the battery can easily be replaced when it wears out after a few years. I get about 4 hrs of listening time, but it'll run just fine connected to an external USB-connected battery in my pocket. It's cheap, it works, the knob is easy to use with winter gloves, and I don't have to fuck with it.

Bought a sena in cyclegear in 2012, they attached it to my helmet back then.
headset still works fine, 0 issues ever. time to buy a new helmet now, I'll have them transfer the thing to the new one..

it cost like $150 or something back then, I dont remember.. way way way lower than 500

One thing to consider if you go on group rides is that they are not cross compatible when it comes to intercom functionality. It’s better to get the brand that your riding partners use. In my circles Sena is much more popular.

Functionally I like the Sena wheel type UI over the Cardo buttons.

I would say reliability wise they will be like any other electronic device, you’ll read more about negatives than positives for either device.

I have mine mounted on my XD 4, it has built in speaker pockets in the cheekpads

My helmet came with a port and speaker pockets for a BT so I picked up a Sena SMH10. Works flawlessly for me and sounds pretty decent at speed with plugs in. Only downside for me is the speakers don't handle much bass , although that is to be expected.

My wife and I tried the cheap systems from China - in the neighborhood of $35 per unit online - and were less than impressed. Battery life was around 2 hours and the mounting bracket ended up breaking on 3 different units we bought. We ended up getting the Bilt Modular helmets with the Sena10 built-in and are very happy with them. Battery life hasn't been determined yet, but it's going to be well over 8 hours in use; we forgot to turn them off one day and the batteries were still usable a week later, so standby time is impressive! Sound quality is good - we haven't paired them with phones yet (we just use them for the intercom feature) but we have no problem hearing each other at freeway speeds.

The helmets were $239 each - which is about what the Sena modules cost separately, so it's a good bargain! The helmets themselves are comfortable, and having the drop-down sun shield inside the helmet is a nice feature. The only down-side we've discovered is that the day-glo color is a bug magnet!

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I think I will go with the Sena 10S due to it's simplicity.

Does anyone wear earplugs and also play music with the Sena speakers? i'd imagine that would be strange?

gone for now
are there any options that I can put a MicroSD card with music on it in, rather than having to tether to my phone for music?

Sounds way better with plugs in. The plugs still let you hear just fine, they just cut out harmful frequencies. On the fwy the BT is pretty un-listenable without plugs. I use Decibullz and they work really well and are comfortable all day.
