Backpacking? Man seeking ????

If you didn't do it as a kid, it'd be hard to really know what to do.

By the time I was 14 I had spent over a year of my life in a tent, so camping is/was second nature to me. For others, like my wife, it's a hardship not worth the effort.

Yea, it's funny how that works out for some people... I know people who absolutely hate the outdoors, and you can't convince them otherwise.

Quite a few years ago, I spent 108 days straight outdoors. Friends and family thought I was nuts, but it was a fantastic experience. Listening to deer walk past, full moon streaming through the trees, tapping of rain on the tent fly during the night etc etc.

Outside of wanting the occasional hot shower (solar is OK, too :thumbup), it has never gotten old to me.

Both the wife and I grew up camping. We tent camped with our two girls when they were young. Now in their 30's the older daughter does not camp. Holiday Inn is roughing it for her. The younger daughter and her husband still love's to camp. The wife and I still camp but in a Four Wheel truck camper. Back is too old to sleep on the ground :x

We went to the Trinity Alps backpacking in mid September for our honeymoon.
We saw no other humans for five days. It was glorious.

So there.

love this thread! my SO and i used to backpack 3 out of 4 weekends. awesome trips too numerous to mention. most often we rolled out our sleeping bags in a patch of pine needles and slept under the stars. only time we used a tent was in the snow. will never forget the sheets of granite, and the crystal clear lakes up in the remote high sierra. wrapping ourselves around each other to keep warm. some of my fondest memories.

Your Husband hit the "Wife Lottery"!!!! He's a smart man!!

I'm laughing at the great comments in this thread. You guys are awesome. (I miss you Ant).

.....on a side note.... I was just informed yesterday that a really good friend died. He was the CEO of a huge company. He was a serious weight lifter and he was extremely passionate about Pit Bulls/ rescuing all sorts of animals. He was an incredible man.

Get out and live life.

that's just so cool! thanks for sharing.

isn't it amazing how we can feel when away from this plastic life they tell us is natural?

I show my kids that. both are seeming to get it. hopefully we'll have many adventures in the near and far future.

That is sooo incredibly beautiful!!! :thumbup

Congratulations to both of you. I'm being a bad Husband, right now. I've ordered; Trekking Poles, Winter Gloves and a new sleeping bag Pad for my Wife for X-Mas. I'm hoping that these items will motivate her to do more overnights with me.

Good luck with that, Ed!

I'd have to get an 11 inch self-inflating mattress for my wife along with a sleeping bag that is warm when she got in and a tent that would block out the sounds of animals outside to get her to go backpacking with me. :laughing

LittleBeast, I am so happy for you that you've found such a great marriage that you feel that way! I think that he is a very luck guy as well!

I backpack occasionally. Some years more than others. Although I suspect my backpacking will become less and less now.

I actually had to backpack a bunch this year for work. While I'd like to say it was fun, it involved packs that were wayyy to heavy to be enjoyable (work gear), extreme heat, no trail, and lots of frustration. It kind of killed my motivation (and my knees).

Now I live in Placerville so I'm much loser to good spots. But I can also sit in my backyard and have a campfire and watch the stars, so I'm not sure how much I'll do moving forward.

If only there were a good way to stay warm...
Down sleeping bags are your friend. Just make sure you get the right one, you definitely want a 0 degree bag.

For walking around, layers. What's available is far, far better than what we had up in Canada in -20 degrees back in the late 60's. :laughing

I figured I'd bring this thread back up from the dead, I'm done with Grad School and now have time on my hands. Anyone still backpacking these days due to COVID? I got lucky and was able to book a trip in March to Catalina Island :)

Let's talk gear!

Dunno about backpacking specifically, but the hiking trails are PACKED full of people these days. Santa Clara County Parks in particular are straight up crowded with their no fees policy.

I miss backpacking. Did a lot of backpacking in my teens and early 20s but the Army really took a toll on my knees and I can't handle the weight and hills anymore. All of my camping these days are done with the truck.
