Planning on riding Sunday and looking for advice. I'll be on a 2002 KTM 400 EXC with a GPR and Recklus. I still think I'll need all the help I can get.

It's on my bucket list.
I worked with a guy who raced it a for a few years. My kids were too young at the time, I just couldn't take him up on his offer to tag along.
Give us a full report. You have kick started my interest in going again.
(I kinda forgot about that event. Thanks)

Yes. Pray you don't get into a pileup in the dust on the first lap. It's a long race, have a pit crew with fuel and goggles.

Raced it 3 times back in the early eighties…Best finish was second overall….It is a long race like 4 plus hours and a lot of fun…Keep your bike upright and don't ride over your head….Pace is the key and your first goal is to FINISH the race as many will either crash out, break their bike or quit early….Dont run out of gas as the laps are quite long…Pit early if you even think you need fuel or water.and most of all……..HAVE FUN !
Thats what this race is all about.
Good luck,

Thanks for the replies! My only goal is to finish so I plan on a pretty conservative pace. I am not a Race/Enduro guy normally but this event looks challenging and awesome.

Take it easy on the first lap.

best advice.

the carnage on the first laps of CC events can get pretty crazy.

just avoiding the pile-ups can make your lap time faster.

oh and like i said before. hydrate!

edit:
now I'm thinking I want to go and race it!

I'll be on row 15. I will have an easy up with a couple of pit crew members. If you decide to enter the event you are welcome to pit with us. If you are interested send me a pm and I'll reply with my cell phone number.

I don't have a gopro but I'll make sure to post an update after the race.

When in doubt, gas it!
14 psi minimum in both tires if you don't wanna risk getting a flat. There's lots of rocks.

Save your energy for the last two laps. It's a lot easier to pass guys near the end of the race when they're spent.

What an experience! It was my first time visiting Virginia City as well as racing in the GP. The town is so cool, its great seeing people riding dirt bikes, quads and side by sides down the main street. Everyone was super friendly both Saturday night and Sunday during the race.

The advice in the tread was spot on, take it easy on the 1st lap and let it rip on the rest. I got a total of 3 laps in with the top riders completing 4. The course was a little shorter this year as Sutro canyon was not rideable due to the snow on Saturday. Overall a very manageable and fun course.

The only piece of advice I would include after completing the event is to ride a couple of enduros or scrambles before riding the VCGP. There was a lot of passing particularly on the first lap due to the large number of riders.

Favorite memory, coming into a tight left hander with a faster rider taking the inside and both of us leaned over and are bars touching the whole way through the turn. The look on the corner sweeps face was priceless, I'm sure he thought there was going to be a pile up!

Looks like this one is going to.be an annual event.
