well, i got this z1000 from a tow yard and got on ebay a zx636r speedo with 7k miles. not bad price of 125.00. found the calibration is way off, when i am doing 35 it reads like 3 mph and at appx 65 its like 6 mph on the speedo.

i verified the speed on a gps which i taped to my tank so its relatively accurate.

anyone know of a way to rewire or reprogram the speedo to get the correct readings?

i have been looking into the schematics of the speedo and think i shall extend my wallet and get the speedohealer which is a flash memory device that can be programmed to adjust for the percentage of error. Currently I have like an approx error of 90% off the gauge reading.

Any tips would be great. Otherwise the shortcut would be to pay out and get the speedohealer ordered from Europe.

Thanks in advance!

John

here I just found this on riderforums. seems another guy tried the same thing. with no luck.
I think a speedo healer might fix the problem though.
hey folks, new member here, just swapped gauges from a 636 onto a z1000 and it does not work. everything works except for speed calibration since the z1000 sensor is at the sprocket cover and reads off the sprocket nut shaft. the 636 reads out somewhere different. i will sell and get a real z1 gauge set. i did this just as an experiment knowing the redline was also different. rpm's lights and all led's are the same however. lucky i paid only 50.00 for 636 gauges online used with 7500 miles.

What year are the Z1k and the 636 cluster?
For '03 and '04 BikeBandit shows that speed sensor as the same part mounted in the same place.
??

Just a thought, but is the part number for the 636 pickup different? If so you might just be able to replace the z1000's pickup with one from a 636.

One of the advantages of a speedohealer or similar is that it will let you adjust for the gearing changes that almost invariably happen later on when you want more wheelies. Also even if set up perfectly you will find that stock speedos will tend to be from 5-15% optimistic.
