Intel seems like it's shitting the bed in the CPU market, and I may decide to make a move to AMD next year (or whenever I get around to a full system rebuild).

I lost out on the 3070 release yesterday, and I'm tempted to look to AMD's hardware there. But I live & die by adobe software, and their support for AMD's GPUs for acceleration has always been disappointing. I just just be patient and stick with nvidia.

I have been planning a new build for a while, with the intention of going for Zen 3 and Navi 2x, and doing a custom loop. Probably 5900x and 6800xt. I may wait a month or two for any bugs to get smoothed over, AMD products often start to see decent sale prices about 2 months in, so hoping this will be the same.

Considering games coming out this year still aren’t maxing the capabilities of my current 1080, I see no particular reason to upgrade yet, but if and when I do I’ll likely be looking to AMD for my next CPU.

1080p peasant :twofinger

in reality though my 3570k and 970 gtx still play the games that I frequent at 1440p, with mid ranged settings and AA off. That being said current shooters are eating it up for lunch. Hasn't really been on my mind since, like I said, i don't play them much, but figured this was finally a big enough leap forward to pull the trigger. My rigs like 7-8 years old.

I'm guessing you're being pretty elective about what you play to arrive at that conclusion. You can't even get at that RTX raytracing goodness on the 1080.

A fellow on a discord server I'm on who got his hands on a 3070 this week reported that he was getting 110-120 FPS in call of duty at 1440 with full raytracing and max settings.

I have no trouble playing COD at high settings (mostly) (though not ultra) at 1440p / 120+ FPS.

That being said I spend more time on PUBG, Overwatch, Hunt Showdown, Remnant FTA. I’m debating on getting back into Elite Dangerous and picking up some of the DCS modules / Microsoft Flight Sim / Star Wars Squadrons though, so if/when that happens it’ll be time to rebuild. Current rig cost me about $2k to build and is only about 3 years old though. Mainly water cooling bits otherwise it would have only been an average $1200 rig.

Have COD titles ever been demanding of current hardware? When i used to game more one of my many gripes with the COD series was that it looked like ass.

anyone have any luck?
not sure how i did it but looks like i managed to snag a 5800x online. I say looks like because obviously it's not in my hands yet. Wanted a 5900x but doesn't look like it was in the cards. Don't think i'm ever going to try and buy a product at launch again. Local microcenter had a line around the block last night by like 8pm, and then today online everything was sold out in a matter of seconds. What a f*ckin shit show

Meh I'll keep my 3700x and just buy an Xbox Series X if I want to game in UHD.

EDIT: Or keep my 3700x and buy a RTX 3080

Thoughts on the "Very good" build from this website? This would be for my boys (2 computers) so they can play shit like Fortnight. LOL

Any changes you'd make?

A lot of changes TBH.
This will get mostly better performance for quite a bit less. I don't think any computer built today should have less that 16 GB of RAM, and SSDs are so cheap you can get a 1 TB NVME one for pretty cheap.

ya i saw that when it came online
i didn't trust the shipping time, hope it works out for them

they're still gonna try and secure it another way but wanted to at least get an order in and see what turns up faster

on a side note, anyone got a screaming deal on a GPU they're looking to get rid of? 1660super or higher

I have a 980 ti in my old build sitting on my desk. I'd rather sell the whole build (i7 / 16gb ram - no ssd I took storage out) but I'd sell the card alone. It's been sitting in the case since I built my newer pc in april

I actually just picked up my first NVME drive, and while the bench marks are def faster than my sata ssd I don't notice faster boot times or anything. I'm guessing large data transfers is where they shine but I don't do much of that.

Still, NVME is the way to go if buying new i'm with you on that, the price point makes no sense in getting a sata drive.
