z900 Thoughts?

Theres a couple solid deals on new inventory 2018/19 Z900s in the low $8k range otd. Thinkin about pickin one up. Occasional trackday and commutes - my primary concerns are around reliability. Online reviews seem to be pretty positive.

Any feedback from BARF?

My wife has 1 track day B pace on hers. The bike is great. 5k miles so far no issues.

Full exhaust with power commander no abs

I'm not aware of any known issues except the rear shock mount that was beefed up as a recall 2017 model

I love mine!

Comfy, sporty, usable power, ABS... if you go to the “Your bike on location” thread you can see lots of pictures of my handlebar, and a couple of the whole bike! :laughing

I LOVE the Z900RS.
The regular Z900 doesn't do much for me as a street bike. It's got a tall first gear, aggressive ergos, and a peaky powerband. It's probably a fine track bike, but it fell flat on the street for me.

The RS is a <$4k difference OTD - i love how it looks but also do have a budget Im looking to stay within.

Ill check em out Dice!

They're 2 very different bikes. I get the price difference. I'm biased towards street oriented bikes, so the standard Z900 had an uphill battle. Close ratio transmissions with tall first gears are Satan incarnate as far as I am concerned, and if I remember correctly, I could go almost 60 in first on the Z900. Really tarnished the rest of the bike as an experience for me.

Would a Z900 be a good choice as a second bike for someone who has only ever ridden a 2000 SV650, and who would mostly use the bike for commuting within SF and for weekend rides to Marin etc.?

Asking for a friend, who is my husband. He has new-bike fever, and I’m looking for input... should I encourage or discourage him?

A bit of context: he started his search with CB500Rs (which is more than enough bike for The City IMHO) but then his eye was caught by a shiny object on SFMoto’s website, namely a new 2019 Z900 for $8K.

Speaking of jump in power, I was at the local dealer the other day and the Z H2 really piqued my interest....

It doesn't look that bad in the flesh! :laughing

I bought a no abs no riding mode no traction control 2019 model in March for $6499 + tax title dealer prep. Rides great! Love the UJM in-line-four, (even though I like the Yamaha triple too.) I own several Kawis before and can attest to Kawi's rock solid reliability. One down side is that the front forks is not easily upgrade-able without going with a complete pricey cartridge kit solution. The Yamaha triple, on the other hand, is easily upgrade-able with reasonable prices. Had I done my homework prior to the purchase, I may have gone with Yamaha. For compression, I had to do it the old fashion way by changing fork oil weight. By trial and error, I arrived at a mix of 10 wt and 15 wt weight to get what I want out of it and can finally ride it like I stole it on the bumpy Santa Cruz mountain roads. For me at 175lb, the fork oil weight is ~36 CST@40C. The rear shock is for a 200lb rider so a little stiff for me. I added a set of Shad 23 pannier. So it's ok.

For accessories, 1st thing I bought is a windshield. The little flyscreen is useless on the freeway. The 2nd thing is the seat. The Kawi ergo seat works for me, probably not good enough for a Death Valley trip. For a DV trip, I will have to add a sheepskin to the seat.

Don't mess with the fork protrusion. The in-line four pulls like crazy. On a clover leave from 280W to 85N, my front wheel is off the ground for quite a distance. Leave it at the factory setting (6mm protrusion). It seems to reasonably keep the front down.

After 5K on the front, and 7K on the rear, I got rid of the OEM Dunlop and got some Bridgestone S22. Big difference!
