Your personal definition of in-law

wannabe

"Insignificant Other"
I was just having a conversation with my god daughter, and I came to the conclusion that a lot of people have a different set point regarding how far their definition of 'in-law' goes.

For example, my sister's husband is my brother in-law. Nobody disputes that. The dispute is related to how far that goes:

1. Is my sister's husband's sister also my in-law?
2. If so, would her husband also be my in-law?
3. If so, would his sister be my sister in-law?
4. etc...

For simplicity, I have decided to just stop at my sister's husband being my brother in-law. Everyone else is his relative in my book.

Where do you draw the line?

#2: Brother-in-law
#3: Sister-in-law-once-removed
#4: Brother-in-law-once-removed
#5: Sister-in-law-twice-removed
#6: etc...

I'd consider the "removed" concept in cousins to apply similarly here, just in number of marriages away instead of number of generations away.

Sorry, still a bit unclear. Where does the 'removed' part kick in? With the 2nd marriage or at the 2nd sibling? In other words, is my brother in-law's sister my sister in-law once removed by your definition, or is her husband the one that is removed?

Doesn’t really matter. I’ve never met my sister’s husband’s siblings. They don’t exist as far as I’m concerned.

My family would be really confusing.

My sister Shirley married Greg
Greg is my brother-in-law
My sister Less married Chuck
Chuck is my brother-in-law
However Greg is Chuck's older brother...

So are Greg and Chuck my double brother-in-laws?

When I was a teenager, they tried to set me up with Greg and Chuck's youngest sister, who was my age. Luckily, there was no chemistry there and it only went 1 date ...

Whew!!!!

Dude has been married three times and still has the same in-laws who happen to also be his biological parents.

In-laws are all of the relatives you gain through marriage.
Steps are the ones you gain when your parent marries.
Half is the brother/sister you gain when one of your parents has a different partner for a kid.

My Ex wife's step brother from her mothers 5th marriage adopted 2 boys with his wife. I will always consider them family.

I don't know how to really draw lines anymore.

My ex-wife was previously married, and when they split up his family 'kept' her in their close family circle (he wasn't close to them anyway I guess). They're genetically related to the kids, but they made it obvious that she was welcome also.
When I married her they accepted me, and now that we've since divorced they dropped her and kept me. :rofl

My ex's ex's family is like family to me. No idea what the terminology would be. :laughing
