Propolis echinacea spray from HerbPharm. This natural remedy works better than any synthetic pharmaceutical product I've ever tried. But make sure to buy the HerbPharm brand. Other products I've tried don't work.

??? better than Tamiflu? I have been told if you hit the Flu early with Tamiflu it really helps.

  • Blew my nose a lot. Body doesn’t want something that’s in it, so my thought was... get rid of it.
  • Drank lots and lots of fluids. Mostly water. Thought was to put fluids back in since I was expelling so much.
  • Rested a lot the first few days, then slowed normal routine down for a week once I felt better. Didn’t do that the first time and it kept coming back.
  • Finally called the doc, and she told me to do exactly what I’d already been doing. She also suggest a saline nose rinse, but that seemed to gross, so I ignored that advise. :laughing

A review of clinical data concluded that if you take it ASAP once you have a symptom, Tamiflu can shorten the duration of the flu by 21 hours. If you wait too, long to take it, there is no effect. There is considerable controversy about the risk-benefit ratio of that drug. I haven't tried Tamiflu, but a 21 hour benefit is not enough for me to want to take a synthetic drug.

For me Propolis Echinacea relieves sore throat and head congestion immediately, and the relief lasts a long time. It feels like it helps me to recover faster. Although I'm extremely wary of products sold as "nutritional supplements," and in most cases they are far more dangerous than prescription pharmaceuticals, I have grown to trust Herb Pharm for product consistency and efficacy.

old wives tale or not, warm, nearly hot, salt water gargle provides me some relief on sore throats... though i have to talk myself into it every time because it sounds disgusting even though i know better

^ Yeah I was surprised to here you promote a hippy drug ;) The severity of this years flu would prompt me to seriously consider tamiflu. My thought is if we are having a very lethal flu year, take all the help you can get in fighting it even if the relief of symptoms seems minor. Is there data on the effectiveness of tamiflu in preventing fatalities?

Mostly what others have already said.

Or, you can go to your local ER for half a day, wait in the lobby with other sick people and help get the ones who AREN'T there for flu catch it themselves, rack up a $3500 bill for MAYBE some IV fluids, Motrin/Tylenol, and possibly a useless Tamiflu and be told the same stuff.

Surprisingly, the above is the preferred course of action for thousands of people.

LOL, I'm a believer in hippy drugs, but the problem is that they are unregulated and sometimes contain startling levels of solvents, heavy metals like lead, and other highly toxic contaminants. I stay away from dietary supplements for that reason, but when I'm sick I turn to HerbPharm and ibuprofen for relief. I also find that a daily glass of inky red wine seems to help when I'm sick.

Here's a synopsis of the Tamiflu data review done by the Cochrane group. They accessed Tamiflu clinical data from EMA, and determined the "true" efficacy of the drug and side effects.

Judge for yourself if you think Tamiflu is worth it. It has not been shown to slow the spread of the flu. So how much would you risk for 21 hours of relief?

Tylenol with codeine.

But really...alternate between tylenol and motrin every 4-6 hours. Lots of fluids.

Tamiflu only works if taken within 36 hours of initial symptoms which most folks don't realize they even have the flu.

I simply rest by climbing under the blankets and getting as hot as possible. Doesn't heat kill the virus. This method for me generally results in only one or two bad days. However I haven't had the flu in a few years so I can't recall exactly how long symptoms last.

Sudafed with Pseudoephedrine (not prescription but behind the counter ), musinex (or generic guaifenesin ),during the day and Theraflu at night. Once a day with the saline sinus rinse.

Sorry about your sick, Mel, hope you're better soon !

Flu shot works for some, but its efficacy and safety is a crapshoot every year. I will not take that product. I can't imagine a circumstance where I'd consider it.

so much great advice and thoughtful responses.
Appreciations!

Regarding feeling better-may this be the worst event that happens to me for the rest of my life! I am sure I'll survive and thrive after a few days of resting when possible and taking medicine. I will be making chicken soup too and going to the Sacramento Co-op to search for remedies for current symptomology.
