Designed by Swatch and built by Mercedes Benz. Gets about 70 mpg on the freeway. Chrysler is reported to bring this car to the US market in 07.

Here's the story.

Would you buy it?

Yes, but for city driving only. I'd be worried about taking that on the highway with all of the big cars and not know now if it has the power to get you away from trouble at speed.

Here's the engine, actual size:

I was just kidding about it being actual size but it's tiny. Here's the specs:

cdi engine data.
Displacement: 799 cc
Net power: 40 hp @ 4,200 rpm
Net torque: 74 lb-ft @ 1,800 - 2,800 rpm
Acceleration, 0-100 km/h²: 19.8 seconds
Maximum speed³: 135 km/h

I wonder if max speed is downhill only :confused

Did I mention you can do your own bodywork?

bodypanels.jpg
....
bodypanels-1.jpg

"The smart fortwo bodypanels are the world's first standard bodypanel system, making them a truly unique feature. The bodypanels are made of scratch-proof polycarbonate plastic and are available in a range of moulded-in colours. They're recyclable and dent-resistant, they don't rust, and better still, completely exchangeable. Should any panel be badly damaged, you can replace it in next to no time. A complete bodypanel fresh-up takes barely two hours at your nearest smart Centre."

ummm, I think that they're wrong about being the "first standard body panel system", I think Renault had that on one of their cars....a european friend said that one of their pranks was to switch panels on parked cars, so they ended up with all different colors

I still like the concept though

(don't mind me, I drove a Honda 600 for a couple years)

Is that the SmartCar, like they have in France?

I think it would be a great idea for people who live in cities with parking issues (like Paris or NYC or San Francisco), but don't see much point in it otherwise.

Too tiny, can't carry much stuff, and yeah, might be nervous driving it on highways.

It is pretty cute though.

Years ago, a big huge dude that worked out at my gym drove a Le Car.

... and furthermore, you can bling out yer Smart Car with BRABUS trick parts, how cool is that?

Carbon effect trim, adds 2 hp:

I foresee those things being tipped and vandalized like there's no tomorrow for the first year or two after release. Plus, can't split lanes on that thing.
