What appears to be the world's largest flying aquatic insect was discovered earlier this month in China's Sichuan province, officials there say.

According to the Insect Museum of West China, an expedition to the outskirts of Chengdu in mid-July returned dobsonflies with 8.3-inch wingspans and "giant snake-like fangs." Previously, the largest-known aquatic insect was the South American helicopter damselfly, which had a wingspan measuring 7.5 inches.

Male dobsonflies only use their jaws to hold onto females during mating. Now, the females... they can mess you up.

Found a few of them when I was in Nicaragua:

Apparently Chinese flying bugs are bigger than Chinese cocks.

That's just mean.

Hey, I wonder if there is a General somebodys version of those bugs on the Szechuan menu? They are bigger than some Chihuahuas (knitting threads here).

I want one!

When I was in Japan, the local department store sold live rhinocerous beetles in the toy section. I wanted to buy one and bring it back home for a battle royale against a tarantula. (Sadly, I couldn't figure out a way to get one back through customs.)
