World Superbike Weekend - An Epic time thanks to Pirelli

A few weeks ago I got a call from Chris Wall, Director of Marketing for Pirelli and he invited a barf representative to join him/ Pirelli at the World Superbike race in Utah. He told me Pirelli was reaching out to the E-World and barf was a very large, well run and clean forum and they wanted to see if I had a journalist that may want to attend the event on our behalf as a guest. Of course I thought of me.. :teeth Not a true journalist by any means, but with some feature stories and covering the AFM Races via the barf racing website I felt I could do it. The only real guy we got around is Mike Solis so I thought he might be on it if I could not work it out… Shit this could be cool!

Being a good and happily married guy I told Chris that I had to check with the boss and would get back to him, but in any case I will send someone. The Boss said OK sure!! (Sorry Mike)

So I got my travel orders and I was the first of three folks that got off the plane Saturday afternoon and sure enough Chris spotted me in my… Pirelli hat. I was already in the mode (butt kissing??.. nah.. sharing the love) and soon John and Jim joined us, each picking me out as the Pirelli guy. :laughing

Jim is with US DESMO and loves his Ducati’s.
John a retired Honda Exec that is doing a journalism thing.

Both are retired and have so much energy and great stories about the industry and life experiences to share. Throw in Chris who has the same and myself and you have the makings of some good conversation.

We loaded in the Pirelli Suburban and after a quick trip to the track and I had my first views of Miller. (See Pic 1 below) Beautiful for sure, very clean and well maintained. It reminded me of Indy in that way and I felt immediately I could not drop a cigarette butt… I should honor the effort.

I headed up to the stands with Jim as John went to find the BMW Team. He is doing a feature on them for Bikeland.org. I noted immediately that this is a big sprawling layout. The Racers on the far side were like ants crawling along at high speed that was jaded by the distance. I watched as riders flew by us along the front straight at 170 MPH or so on their way to over 180. Man this is cool. The Mountains surrounding the track were covered with snow and the sky was filtered cloud cover with mostly sunshine.. Utah is sure pretty.

I was introduced to Scott, the man at Pirelli and Richard Moore the US Racing Director. Richard looked familiar and after a few minutes or two of chat we realized we raced against each other at Suzuki Cup Events in the AFM North and South and in the WERA Endurance races ( 24 awesome hours). He always whooped me, but what the hell, recalling the players in the AFM races.. Devaux, Jepson, Wensloff and many more was cool. He would continue to provide great insight/tips over the weekend and also I got to see where his path in motorcycle racing took him oversees to race and 15 years ago to Atlanta, Georgia to join the Pirelli Team. (See Pic 2).

After a bit I went to find the Barf Racing/Pawnmoto/Boulder Motorsports / CT Racing / Pirelli Team Garage.
(Spoken like a true supporter :teeth)

Chris (Siglin) had made his practice run and JP from Boulder and Alex from Fastline were going thru the bike in detail. (See pic 3, 4 and 5)

I chatted with Chris and TJ (Pawn Moto – the guy that is really giving the race effort a 100% effort) and found out that Chris was in a decent spot in the stacked field and was planning his next qualifying session thinking that more was to be found, as he had picked up 2 secs in the previous QP and thought he could climb to the same second as the leaders with some more time on the track.

I spent a little time in the Pirelli hospitality area above the main straight located next to the Victory Podium, which had a nice view of the entire track.
Always nice to be able to grab a beer and a little grub without a hassle :port

We ended the day and headed to Salt Lake City. We checked in and walked a few blocks to dinner at a killer Italian Restaurant. We met Kevin, who is Chris’s opposite in Europe and lives in Milan. He also would become a great source of information. Next to us was the Speed broadcast crew and Chet Burks came over to say to Chris, Scott and Kevin. I learned that Chris does a killer Scott Russell impersonation and Kevin can do a mean Nicky Hayden as well. These guys are fun!!

A great meal with mucho vino and conversation took us back to the Hotel and some rest.
Breakfast at 8AM followed and Chris, John, Jim and I continued to get to know each other. At the track I checked in the Team again and settled in for a great day. Sunshine and a cool breeze would be the story on the weather. I missed Chris’s QP and found that it was cut short by a red flag in GTU and he only got eight minutes. So the plan to put on the qualifying tire at the end and see what he could do was out the window. He would start
7th in tomorrow's Main Support Event.

Soon the National Anthem was going and peeps around the track stopped to pay respect to the Flag and I am sure many had Memorial Day thoughts in there head as did I... Saying a quick thanks to all those that gave of themselves so I could be here having a kick ass day!! :flag

Racing is on!

The GTU grid lined up for a 12 lap battle with the top spot taking 5K thanks to Lucas Oil and the Utah Sportbike Association getting together a couple years ago to arrange US based support races. You can read about the race in a feature article I am doing.. coming soon.

Jimmy Wood holeshot the race and never looked back. Taylor Knapp took second and Geoff May third on his own Gixxer 600 after a good battle with David Anthony and Brant Wiwi. It felt good to be racing!

With the rest of the day off our Race Team hooked up some good promotion. The Boulder Motorsporst guys hooked up the Ducati Girls for a photo shoot with Chris and it turned into a Team deal.

Lots of fans stopped for photo ops and asked about who we were.

Chris told me later that we should add a bayarearidersforum URL below the barf racings logo because lots of folks were asking him and did not know if barf was a good thing.. or a bad thing..:laughing :barf

After a bit the crew rolled the bikes back to the garage and everything was set for Monday.

I enjoyed the run up to superpole and was pretty stoked when Checa beat Biaggi for the pole. We were planning on going to dinner with Carlos on Monday evening and I figured if he won a race it would be one hell of a dinner..!

That night we had dinner at the Hotel with a friend of Chris’s from their racing days. Matt was a former Endurace racing champ and very knowledgable. He works for Parts Unlimited. It is amazing how many folks you know in common in the Motorcycle Racing circles. Matt and I knew several. Great conversation once again.!!

We had been trying to get a barf get together.. together at the track and so I wanted to click into that and see if we had a plan. My fooking phone would not let me log in to barf.. so I just read and checked out what up. I got a text saying a gig was going off at 8pm, but we were not done until 9:30pm so I missed it.. :jaded. I heard it was good!

The news on TV that night had a live interviews with Jason Disalvo and local dude Dylon Husband running WSS and the racing got some very decent coverage in the “State of Sport”. Hardly a mention here in the Bay Area for motorcycle racing so that was good to see. :thumbup

Monday... the big show.

Monday was race day and after another nice breakfast we headed out to the track.

I was pretty stoked because we were going to get a tour of the Pirelli Tent and get a tech talk by Giorgio Barbier the Director of Motorcycle Racing for Pirelli.
(see pic 1 and 2)

He walked us thru the tent (which Kevin explained was not the usual blinging giant truck set up for most of the races). Pirelli had shipped over 4K tires for the weekend about 1K less than normal because the Superstock 600 and Open classes were not running at the event. This also meant that Pirelli sent over a tech crew of 22 rather than the normal 30. Tires are shipped via a cargo ship rather than air for some technical reason and sent off to Utah about a month before the event. Inside the tent stacks of tires everywhere and a ½ dozen work stations that were servicing the Teams. Each rider gets an allotment of tires that are for them only. (see pic 3)

Each rider gets a number that is stamped in orange on the side wall – ( see pic 4)

Each SB rider would get 9 fronts and 11 rears plus the qualifier tire for superpole.

Each WSS rider (tires stamped in green) would get 8 fronts and 10 rears.

Each rider’s crew checks each tire in and out via the computer station in the tent. (see pic 5). Each rider has a bar coded sheet that keeps track of who is using what and their allotment. (see pic 6). The tires returned are stacked in an open area and have the riders racing # chalked on them so teams can look and see who might be using what. (see pic 7 of Jim checking out the stack of used tires).

One thing I noticed was the very soft compound.. depressing my finger nail into the rubber just made me smile with the stickiness of real race rubber.

Luckily many tires would not be used. That meant no rain!! Giorgio posed in front of the container of rains for us and was indeed happy that we had a sunny weekend. (see pic 8)

Later in the thread for those that want to get technical I will explain more on how Pirelli uses the WSB Series as a major portion of their R & D and how that is helping them bring the best stuff to us the street riders.

Kevin explained that they had used 40 different solutions last year and they were loving the feedback that every team provides them and that is why different solutions are always being developed. (see pic 9).

"Solution" is a mixture of the compound, the carcass and the profile. Changing any one creates a new solution. More on that later!

After the tech talk Chris came over to our pit (see pic 10) to meet Siggy and the Team. He also did a video interview of both of us that should be up on the Pirelli Website soon. I think he was impressed with the Team and certainly mentioned Siggy was a well spoken young guy. :cool I mean how cool is it to be invited to this by Pirelli and then they find out we are racing and on Pirelli’s!

With morning practice over for all the classes the fans got the chance to do a pit walk (see pic 1) and those that rode to the races a chance to stroll around the track. (see pic 2).

A special Memorial Day ceremony that included 2010 American Flags on the infield, the National Anthem and a fly over by three F-18’s, which brought us to the first race. I won’t get into details of the race, but I was really pulling for Checa to win and he was dominating for sure. After ¾ of the race was over he slowed out of Tooele Turn and handed Max Biaggi the win. What a bummer. Haslam had a hell of a ride to move up to P2 and Haga found himself on the Podium as well. Pic 3 is a shot of the podium by PGA Tour (John).

Haga must have know barfers were in the crowd because he saluted them appropriately (see pic 4 also by John). :laughing

The World Supersport guys would race next and the best part of the race was watching Chaz Davies hold off a group of riders for 4th place. He was backing the Triumph in to several corners and while he did not make the podium it was the best action on the track.

CT Racing the local California Pirelli distributors, were out to the WSB race weekend and got a win earlier when Jimmy Wood took the GTU Race. They were looking for more from Chris and Brant Wiwi. Pic 5 shows Corey talking to Chris in the hot pit earlier in the day and Pic 6 is their area for servicing the Privateer Pirelli guys over the weekend.

Pic 7 is Brant Wiwi in the pits. Pic 8 is the new Buell ridden by Geoff May next to the older model. The new one is much sleeker for sure.

I am doing a detailed article about the GTU and GTO Races so I will also link that later in the thread, but here are a few highlights of Chris's effort. The race was to be 12 laps, but the race was cut to 10 laps after a quick red flag on the first start. In Pic 9 you will find Wiwi behind Knapp and just ahead of Chris on the far side of Ricky Corey another AFM Formula Pacific regular.

Jeremy Toye was the early leader and he seemed to take control. David Anthony crashed early in the Release Turn (last turn onto main straight). Toy eventually fell off as well, giving the lead to Knapp and leaving Chris Perris and Geoff may to battle for second. Chris caught Wiwi in the later laps when he had some mechanical problems that would end his race after a couple of more laps. That moved Siggy to 4th where he would finish.. just off the podium. Here is a shot of the podium for GTO.

L to R: Chris Perris, Taylor Knapp and Geoff May.

With just one race remaining I thought I would throw out some general fun stuff that happened over the weekend at the track.

Miller had a lot going on!

Dodge had some adventure rides going on where pro drivers were taking folks for essentially side show type of rides in the Challenger and Viper.. it was cool to watch, but I felt sorry for CT Racing guys.. they were close to the set up and got to hear screeching tires all weekend.. :p

BMW had a stunt team at the event and that was a first for me.
The go kart track was going strong all weekend as well.

A couple of pics below for your stunting amusement!

Also I feel that because of BMW racing you have a lot of new fans coming out to the races because of them. I noted a lot of BMW fans around .. and I mean a lot!! That is cool and to have so many bike manufacturer's on the grid is a good thing. The series is healthy! :thumbup

Also I found a few barfers hanging in the Turns. Lots of volunteers headed out to the races from the Bay Area.... for some fun and a :party

Here is a link to a ride report on some of the barfers that rode to the races.
http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5874829#post5874829

I heard that somehow a barf :twofinger got painted in the gravel early Monday AM.. wish I got to see it.. :laughing

Word was that the track officials were busy at 6AM brooming it out of Turn 1.

The last pic is Siggy's Team.

L to Right
Alex with Fastline / Brian from Boulder Motorsports / Siggy / TJ from Pawn Moto / JP from Boulder Motorsports

Congrats guys.. you did awesome! :applause

After munching on some more good chow it was time for the final race of the weekend.

Once again Checa broke to the front ahead of Biaggi and once again a mechanical brought him down.
I was really bummed for the man.. he was so dominant on the track and must have been so frustrated.

Biaggi did the double this time with another race win followed by his teammate Leon Camier with Cal Crutchlow grabbing the final spot.
Haslam had crashed out giving up his point lead to the popular Italian. Haga took 4th and Corser brought home 5th for the throng of BMW fans.

The day was done and we headed back to the Pirelli Suburban to make our way back to SLC. I caught Ralph Sheheen on the way out and said hello to the former AFM announcer. I used to bring Ralph a stack of CD’s from KSJO back in the day and we chuckled about those good old days before leaving the track. Man he has sure done well since those AFM days.

So back to the hotel a quick freshen up and we got loaded back in the burb for the ride to dinner with Carlos. This time all three Pirelli labelled Suburban were nose to tail going thru SLC. I felt like I was in an episode of 24 or maybe a Statesman of sort.. It was cool. The other rigs had a bunch of folks from Parts Unlimited who were also guest of Pirelli for the weekend.

Twenty folks at a sprawling table would be the final event of and eventful weekend. Carlos seemed OK and when I told him I was bummed about his day he had a simple reply “That’s Racing”. Certainly the veteran has seen his share of good and bad luck over the years.

Here are a few pics of the dinner.

1. The restaurant.
2. A very long table!
3. Carlos surfs mini barf.. :teeth
4. Jeff with Pirelli lets Carlos know we all thought he should have won!!
5. Carlos and I.

So a great weekend for the memory banks for me..! Pirelli treated me so good.. and I had a blast.. learned a lot and got to meet some very passionate moto people and also got to see Siggy and the Team kick some ass too.

More coming:
• How Pirelli makes the WSB R & D work for our tires.
• Feature story on the GTU and GTO classes
• Track Day tips from the Tech God’s at Pirelli for us mere mortals.

Cheers,

:smoking
