“SAN JOSE — Two people were arrested and a suspect was still being sought after one of them shot at a man who stopped them from stealing his car in Willow Glen, not knowing they had targeted a retired San Jose Police Department officer, authorities said.

The victim was not injured in the Monday afternoon encounter on Richland Avenue, according to San Jose police. After the arrests, police said, officers recovered a self-assembled AR-15 rifle composed of prefabricated parts that made it untraceable.“

Mind sharing the whole article on here for those of us not interested in Mercury News's paywall?

Not suppose to do that. Copyright shit.

He gave a snip. A little bigger one would be fine.

I got paywalled too!

I don’t get paywalled.

This are the best parts...

... left his SUV parked in the driveway with the door ajar. Three men driving by in a Jaguar sedan stopped, and one person got out and tried to drive off in the SUV.

But the intruder fumbled with operating the vehicle, and soon after the victim came back out and confronted him, and briefly chased him with the aim of grabbing him. The suspect ran off and got back in the Jaguar, which drove a short distance then stopped in the middle of the street....

a man emerged from the Jaguar, raised a semiautomatic rifle and fired two shots at the victim, Sgt. Christian Camarillo said. One round hit a neighboring home, piercing the garage and damaging a water heater...

pecial-enforcement unit spotted the suspects’ car about an hour later and approximately four miles away near Monterey Highway and Montecito Vista Drive. That touched off an attempted traffic stop and a pursuit that headed north for at least 10 miles and crossed into the city of Santa Clara, Camarillo said.

In Santa Clara, the Jaguar stopped and the man believed to be the shooter ran off...

I have coworkers that live there. It’s supposed to be a “safer” part but evil criminals do come there looking for easy victims. My former boss lived there three years ago. He and his wife was murdered because his daughter was dating a crazy guy. After they broke up the crazy guy attacked their house killing them and took the little brother hostage. Thankfully SJPD showed up and killed the bastard instead of showing him mercy.

I live in a pretty safe area in Oakland, but this same thing has been happening A LOT recently. Way more than I've seen in the past 6 or so years being here. Massive spike in armed robberies and armed burglaries. It's looking like some people just drive around looking for opportunities and pounce when one presents itself.

Glad the guy wasn't hurt. I'd be pretty damn terrified of someone pointing an AR at me. You don't need to be a good shot to shoot one of those well

1. Article looks to be pushing the "ghost gun" agenda pretty hard
2. Situational awareness
3. Increase in crime like this may - MAY - it's a possibility - might - could maybe - perhaps - have something to do with all the "we won't bother prosecuting" "get out of jail free" stuff?
4. Might - maybe - could possibly - also have something to do with anti-police sentiment, so people inclined to commit these types of crimes are more likely to push their luck knowing the general public idiots will side with them over the cops, thus enabling poor behavior
5. Smaller component contributing - more people in lower wage jobs out of work and looking to make up for lost wages in more ballsy ways
6. Polsink incoming, I see at least 3 posts so far that are pushing it that way.

I detest Mercury News, but I think the article was pretty fair in their reporting on the firearm.

Agreed on your 2nd point. It's Willow Glen, but the dude left his car running with the door open.

It is sad that the culture here has the opinion it’s the victim’s fault. Blaming the victim is despicable. Why won’t we blame the criminals anymore? I’m shocked by how much it’s popular to people here to make excuses for them.

Do you think it is safe for someone to leave their keys in their bike's ignition when it is out in public?

We’ve all forgotten keys in the ignition, door unlocked/open from time to time, but we don’t make a habit out of it. Doesn’t mean someone else has the right to take our stuff if we do.

But I see more and more people feel it’s ok to commit those crimes. And I also see more and more people defending them and blaming the victims. I hope this trend stops spreading.

I agree with you. Just because the perp had a ghost gun, doesn't mean people have to blame the victim or the newspaper.

This type of thinking sounds like one feminists hate to hear.

Just curious ever been to Arizona or gone to college in Santa Barbara?

That's quite literally what they do.

Check out Mark Rober's recent GlitterCam3.0 update video- one of the packages gets picked up by a thief and they track him all over the city. From the audio there are several dudes in the car and they spend their evening literally canvassing the blocks looking for targets. Or, as Mark conjectures, they just really enjoy driving. 16m for the SF-specific heist.
