WIFI repeater/booster?

A bit of an odd question...

We live on a boat and are heading back down south soon to keep cruising. In the past we have used wifi booster antennas connected to the the laptop to pick up wifi signals when we are anchored out.

We now use ipads for almost everything since they take way less power to run than my crappy old macbook. Its sees that no one makes a plug in wifi antenna for the ipad so I have been looking for some kind of wifi booster/repeater that can pick up wifi at long range and re-broadcast it around our boat.

Whatever it is will need to run on very little power or else its not worth using and we will go back to laptop and antenna. We have 110vac and 12vdc available on the boat.

Anyone computer people have an idea?

Find a used router on Craigslist that's compatible with DD-WRT firmware (Google it). You can configure it to run as a WIFI repeater and rebroadcast whatever wifi network it's connected to. The beauty of it is you can manually set the strength of the signal, so the lower the signal, the less power the router consumes.
