Why I put a Road Racing Caliper on my sled.

When I quit road racing in '89 I bought my Harley the following year.
I thought this is a good way to enjoy the ride and not be all crazy on the street. I was right and I truly enjoyed the cruise. I went up to Redwood City and brought cash money to buy my '91 Softail Custom..they had it on the floor. After a quick bargaining session I walk out to a new bike with a :teeth on my face. The guys explained the routine and I took off..too return in 5 minutes..."there is something wrong with the brakes."

The guy jumped on the bike and came back in 2 minutes .."there fine"

"What..?" He then asked what did you ride before ..etc..I told him Gxxr 750, Suzuki Cup,AFM, AMA etc.. He laughed and explained the technological difference in the brakes ,weight factor, etc.. I rode home a little worried..

About 3 months after owning the bike I felt that, You know what..I can do better. I went a got a fully chromed, 4 piston, performance machine road race caliper and planted it on the front!!!

THE BEST IMPROVEMNET EVER!!!!!! 2 Fingers instead of all four and a worried look... The newer Harley brakes are better..but nothing beats real racing quality stuff. Pulling 700lbs. plus (me and the wife another 310 lbs) down from 60 mph in a hurry is a chore...now I have peace of mind. And on a bike there is nothing more important. Confidence. :teeth

That's one of the things that I really like about my bike. It came with 3-piston Brembro brakes stock, the same setup from the ZX9R I think. The bike stops really well.

THe Japanese metric cruisers offer more technology for less cost than the American Sleds...the original caliper had one piston and it was pressure activate meaning one puck first..pressurized and then the other side comes in to play...only a 1/10th of a second, but any time lapse is bad.

The mean streak has twin six-piston calipers from the ZX9R on it... one of the big selling points I thought when I was looking at them.

Yeah, I hadn't looked real close at the maker of the brakes lately and was just pulling it out of my ass. I did remember the ZX9R though..

Budman,

My wife's Sporty too has a weak brake on the front end (rear too). Did the sport bike brake bolt right on to your HD? I'm assuming that you also replaced the rotor, yes? How much would this cost me (ballpark figure) if I wanted to convert my wife's bike to "real" brakes?

Yes it bolted up..memory..arggh! New Rotor added too..I think about 385.

I have left the back alone as it can lock the wheel just fine :teeth

Good luck
