Why are we opposed from the FB group?

I'll start by saying I barely have any of the facts but...

There was a long term group on the FB named Bay Area Riders Forum that quite a few members were members of...

It was alluded to recently that it was not "appreciated" by ownership here

I understand both sides of it but... why the recent change?

They have since renamed themselves "Bay Area Riders Group" What's up with that?

Curiosity and all that - I'm. Or asking for any change, I don't actually care. Just curiosity.

I think it had to do with the series of people trying to force change on BARF in a quicker fashion than BARF actually changes (TOS) by "quitting BARF and going to FB". We had this hit us a few times in the last few years. The irony: FB comments are well worse and unregulated than BARF, only people aren't anonymous. I've long argued that if we solely used FB logins or known quantity logins, we wouldn't need a TOS at all.

My guess? It's just like any other company. You can't go around calling yourselves something when you have no right to it. If a barf fb page is going to exist it should come from Budman himself. I do remember being apart of a fb page and I also remember leaving because I got 50million notifications on a whole bunch of nothing. Might as well just go to barf. Adding fb too it seemed redundant. Now folks want to claim that they rather post on fb than barf to avoid xyz but you think that the same sexist racist misogynistic people aren't going to go there when they get in trouble here? If anything fb barf feels "clicky" at the moment but once it grows you're gonna get the same kinda people.

For me I rather spend my time here and keep my fb personal. :thumbup

Adam - it's a sepearate entity. No reason to try and regulate both. I get it though

Berto: get it, understood, and agree

Kim: it's your choice to attempt to maintain both. No requirement to do so.

Aside: regulating the name on social media is like regulating it in meatspace. if BARF is a community, then why restrict where they assemble. If I post a ride in the ride subforum, am I allowed to advertise it elsewhere while still calling it a barf ride? The more restriction you add the more difficult it becomes to manage

FB has its place. Somewhere. It doesn't seem to accomodate intelligent discourse very well. It works well for "look at me!" photos, I understand.

Don't be old, Butch

I love you an all but that's an antiquated approach as they get. Don't disagree because you don't understand it.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just trying to understand the response. A response without support lacks

There is no requirement, youre right. But i do think that if you are going to try and create a separate page its needs to be ok'd by Dennis and have a BARF mod to manage it. If its not it shouldnt be allowed. Again you cant take a name and call it your own. Even calling it the "unofficial BARF fb page"

Dont mooch off the blood sweat and tears of someone else's work and call it your own.

I don't disagree Kim

Dennis has spent some significant money to keep this site alive and I appreciate it. I appreciate enough to attempt to offset his spend with my own, as miniscule it may be.

Unfortunately the name is too broad to attempt to protect it.

I feel like I'm being argumentative and that's not my intent here.

Matt, that I know and all that I've been involved with at the moderator level, Dennis/ BARF does not regulate what groups exists on FB, etc. The only conversations/ concerns we've had with any substance have been about naming things "official" BARF for liability reasons (rides, etc). I fully understand that part.

I'm of the belief that proliferation of a name can help a site receive more traffic, so long as the traffic isn't directed away from the site.

What's the purpose of it? As in, what does it do that the vbulletin brafs doesn't?

It allows for unrestricted commentary, away from BARF with the advantage of knowing who is saying what, being able to read it from the outside (about yourself) and thinking "Fuck them when they need a helping hand". Tongue in cheek.

It's really a great tool!

gives people a place to bitch about whats wrong with BARF/continue threads that have been locked and talk about suspensions and whether or not they agree?.... without posting on BARF :laughing

:laughing It must serve another purpose beyond youtube turrets comment.

That would be my thoughts Berto. If it isn't hurting it's helping minus liability.

On the flip, you've got a group that called themselves BARF for "many" years and members joined. Now they step away from the name and take the user base away, supposedly due to direction for leadership here.

Either own our space on FB or don't. But make it known one way or the either. I'm here to support this forum, not some random mimicking this forum.
