Why are San Francisco people storage limits so small?

LA Times said:
At a minimum 150 square feet of living space — 220 when you add the bathroom, kitchen and closet — the proposed residences are being hailed as a pivotal option for singles.

Supervisor Scott Wiener, who drafted the legislation, said smaller units will mean cheaper and more plentiful housing options. With a tech boom underway, thousands of new hires have been snapping up San Francisco's rental stock.

The micro-units will probably go for $1,200 to $1,700 a month, Wiener said. According to the real estate service RealFacts, an average studio apartment in San Francisco now goes for $2,075.

Discuss. :banana

What the shit is this...
We have two people living quite comfortably in about 450 sqft. I can see getting by with half this much space on my own.

I hear you ONick, but they're allowing 2 people in these.

Srsly.

220 ft^2, 2 people, on a permanent basis?

I'm messy, but getting cleaner as we distill this house down to what we really need.

Yes, I can see it working for some. Those who know that it's not for them will self-select, by not renting such an apartment.

I read this article in the Chronicle about a month ago. They're targeting these units towards all the come-lately techies. If you haven't noticed there's been a lot of recent real estate development around the downtown / civic center area with Twitter and a host of other companies making their presence known. Since the loft thing didn't work out quite too well 12 years ago, they're trying to churn out condos for the incoming demand of living space.

San Francisco HAS Rent control.

Doesn't apply to every building or situation.

Also doesn't apply to new rentals. They can charge whatever they want if you're moving in. It really has to be by square foot and age of the building.

$2/sq ft sounds good.

Almost..but not really, or not even close, actually not at all.

You can't control sq. ft. value like that. Living space is a commodity and Property is an investment in that commodity. If you put the government in control of that commodity value, it's commie bullshit. Price fixing is an anti-trust action for a reason. The current system in place that doesn't let you price out people with an existing agreement is good, maybe it could be expanded, but if you have THAT MANY rich assholes all trying to cram into the same box, it's un-American to not allow anyone to profit off of it.

My apartment falls within the rents to be charged for these micro apartments. Except it's normal sized. Even if i were single I still can't see myself living in such a tiny space.

That's the thing, not a huge fan of rent control, but allowing 2 people in 220+70?

Seems a little excessive.

For sanitary reasons alone I'd like to see people get a decent amount of breathing space.

Especially at $1200 a pop. I tend to live a pretty spartan lifestyle. I could make it work in the right neighborhood, but I doubt I would. Although now that I think about it, I would need a second unit that size for my tools. :laughing

What's the sq footage at 895 Bryant? It's two to a cell still- right? There are lots of happy couples there.
