Dave,

What kind of work do you need done on your ZRX? I know them well. I have a table lift at my place too. Easy on the back!

I don't think I need anymore radios, none wants to play walky-taklies with me anyway. :)

Looking up in the closet I discover:
= (I may be talked into selling some of these; or trade for work/help on my KAW ZRX1200):
IC-90S Handheld tri-band transceiver 5watts 2m/440/6m
IC-2800H 2M "mobile" - 55watts powerhouse FM - work distant repeaters/Satellite's/tropospheric DX
IC-706MKII 2m/HF mobile - CW/AM-FM/SSB/Data- 100w HF/I think 25w FM?
^ the above is the cats meow for starter rigs= mobile/base
TM-742 "Tri-Bander" 2m/440/3rd band modules acceptable =220/900/1200Mhz

For my base station:
IC-756 Pro HF/6m "Base Station" 100watt, work the world great receiver.
Ten-Tec "Titan" 1500w Linear Amplifier - when you need a bit more signal
1/2 dozen antenna's for most of the bands
bunch of electronic kits for building I never got around to
numerous power supplies/kits/assorted electronic junk

Hi Chad, Ok, you asked:

It just needs some TLC. The whole house needs TLC (think "Hoarders"); got a couple bum college kids that don't help the wifie & I at all w/anything. Both of us have various crippling issues. The latest old man issues seem insurmountable, so I've basically been on the pc/tv mostly. Not well enough to do any work, much less ride. About given up...(still got hope tho...), can only stand a few minutes at a time, can't see w/one eye way out of wack of the other (needs surgery); & can't walk very far. Too many problems to list.

The bike needs the fuel system cleared out as it hasn't been ridden in 1.5 years. Need to pull carbs & clean them (or send them off to be cleaned, got an expert that wants to do that for me in Phoenix.) Tank needs thorough cleaning as I'm sure there's rust in there. Too many items to list really...:(

It needs the suspension gone thru, but the price of that makes it prohibitive mostly. The shocks are limp & need at least a seal/Nitrogen pressure rebuild, & the same for the forks. I have a feeling the previous owner never did anything to it. The forks are bad enough it scares me/don't want to ride it.

It likely needs a "tune-up." Plugs/etc. I got them & got all the new gaskets for a valve adjustment as I doubt the've ever been checked. I need to change tires as the orgional tires are still there. Thanks to Budman/Dennis's generosity I did get 1 new tire on the back. Still need the front.

That's about it as I don't want to cry/whine on here...

As for the radio's, I'd sell you any/all for a REALLY good deal. The talkies are good in an emergency, & I have a bunch of them. But the real FUN w/radio is HF operation into other parts of the world....

Cheers,

Dave

Hmm. What year is it? Edit- Dave, if you want I'll bring it to my place and fix it up for you as far as I can get it without $$ being spent. I know the bike pretty darn well. I can have it running tip top in an afternoon. Just need a fresh battery & 4 spark plugs.

I'm sure we can find you a tire too. :ride

Another friend of mine gave me a used trackday Q2 front; he wasn't so clear on how old it is= might be a few years; I was just grateful to get it. That's why the bike skert me so much, bad tires w/bad suspension = continuous chattering going straight on concrete slap freeways. =fear. :laughing

The Batt. is brand new & been kept on a Batt. Tender since bought about 9 months ago. It should be ok...? I only replaced it because the bike was still on the 12 year old original battery. Still holds a charge too. Oh, & the bike is an 02' ZRX1200.

There are a # of further problems. I got either a caliper w/sticking pistons or a warped rotor= pulsing in the front brake. Scary. I should just rebuild the calipers, but was given 4 rotors & all 4 were installed first to check for runout. None seen (not measured) so think it's the caliper. Been thinking of going to 4-piston Nissin's or something; the ZRX group has been swapping out bad 6-piston calipers for years. All the newer bikes have gone to 4 piston calipers...

As for removing the bike to your place; the wifie & I both get nervous on that one, as it's not insured or registered right now. That opens us to liability problems should something happen. We both want to think about that one as we were thinking about doing a "wrenchday" here sometime this summer.

As this is getting rather long & hijacking a radio thread, perhaps we should take it to PM or telephone?

Thread's not dead, just in a deep sleep... :teeth

So I passed my Technician test yesterday, yay, and I'm going to look at somebody's newish Yaesu FT-60R HT on Wednesday, maybe get his Kenwood TM-V7 (blue faceplate, not the newer amber).

I've taken the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class & they need ham operators for communication in case of a disaster, so...

Time for a BARF Ham thread in the 1Rider or just stickie this one with BARFers' ham tags?

N000b question - FCC will get the test results, then will notify me that I can select the callsign I want? Any restrictions? Yeah, usually starts with K, W, etc., but beyond that?

I did a search @ the FCC's URL for KP2PK and nobody's got that, so would that work for an amateur license?

Hammers, be advised - that link plus your license can give anybody your full name & address.

If a Mod can move this to an invite-only & monitored zone of teh BARFs like the Safety Patrol thread, that may limit the potential damage. :thumbup

I suggest you remove the link for now.

We will consider doing a private barf ham forum.

How many folks want that??

Dennis, this is another BARF good-image thing. We're community-service oriented, helping the community by linking up and (possibly) working with NERT & CERT & FEMA. :party :thumbup :teeth

Our Dirty BARFers could be a courier service when roads are disrupted, too. :teeth

Not to mention, riding (touring or adventure) and radio go well together. Imagine for example what the Baja group could do with that.

Guys if you're worried about your personals dont post your call. Which is why I don't have K6RFL for my truck tags ;)

That's the thing Al... would like other barf hams to know my call sign but don't want to advertise my home address to the whole Internet. Do you see a downside to a private ham forum?

Congrats on passing your Tech license. You can't select your call-sign unless you apply for a vanity call for an additional cost. TBH, the ham radio licenses are by far the cheapest licenses (that I know of) you can get from the US government that the extra money for a vanity call isn't much. :)

Callsigns are assigned in the order that the FCC receives your paperwork from the VEs.

I'd be up for a private ham forum. I generally have my ht in my backpack wheni m riding the dirty bikes. It would be nice to have a group of folks who have them and maybe a standard Barf freq for simplex communication on rides.

^^^This, in spades. Maybe teh BARFs RSAs should all be ham-qualified so we could comm in real time? Cost of my license was $35 for the class and $15 for the test. An HT (handheld transmitter) is relatively cheap, so this is not much of a financial burden.

I was thinking about the whole internet call look up thing today and came up with a BRILLIANT idea...

Old tech was ham radio. Because it gave the individual the capability to use a public resource (spectrum) in order to broadcast an opinion, it comes with our tickets and heavy penalties for misuse. Hence public station identifiers.

New tech is teh internet. Completely unregulated and a total swamp...
What if the FCC required an internet callsign? With all the same lack of anonymity we have as hams!

THink how quickly teh sink would clean up :rofl:rofl
