Which Way?. Hwys 36 & 299

Rain permitting, I have the opportunity to ride 36/299 next weekend. Will be getting on the road from Chico, wondering if anyone has opinions about which direction to make the loop. Out 36, return 299 or vice versa?

Any other advice gladly accepted.

Interesting. I'm not sure it matters. Both roads are fun both directions.

I'm updating the title to clarify it.

Get over yerself!!!
If'n it wuz me, I'd do 299 first (To get it outa the way) then come back on 36. That'll leave a better taste in yer mouf. :laughing
And speak'in 'bout a good taste in yer mouf, ya might wanta try the Kebob Cafe In Arcata right off 299. :drool

An alternative might be ta do HWY 32 up ta Almanor, then on to Quincy fer sum famous street tacos,
and back down the feather river canyon. (HWY 70) :teeth

Kurt,

Thanks for the title addition.

BanjoBoy,

Nice suggestion. Less mileage, so a better chance to smell some roses. Could do that loop on Sunday and continue home via slab. Or save for another day.

Having logged numerous miles on both roads in both directions my preference is 36w return 299 into Weaverville and whatever you do hwy 3 is an absolute must into Hayfork(affectionetly known as 'the hayfork GP in some circles):thumbup and continue south into Peanut then intersect with 36E back into Red Bluff.

Ooh, winner! Good suggestion. :thumbup

Truth be told, I'd probably just ride 36 both directions. :laughing

OK, now a plan is coming together. But can't ride 36 both directions or I'd be accused of doing "laps" in that other thread.

Nah that one is worth it. There ARE a ton of good roads up there though.:teeth

Having ridden 36 in both directions (at different times:laughing:twofinger) my preference is also 36 W from Red Bluff. I actually haven't ridden 299 except for from 3 to Redding.

I wouldn't worry much 'bout any little punk-ass sissy face that'd accuse you of do'in laps on 36. :teeth

HWY 3 (And 96) are great but the best part is from Weaverville north, and ya might be get'in into serious snow country this timea year.

Assuming you're gonna spend Friday night in Chico, and don't get too drunk at Sierra Nevada, 299/36 loop is a good day ride fer this time a year. (We hit 36 last February, and dun saw a bald eagle; in flight!)

(If'n ya click on the "google" in the lower left, it'll give you details, distance, & time breakdown)

And assuming yer spend'in Saturday night in Chico, and iz go'in ta Foster City Sunday, and if'n yer butt ain't too sore,
you can do my other ride too. :party
(Note the area around "C" in map #2, yer go'in through Cherokee, and over Table Mountain, to the quaint little nothing town of Bangor. :thumbup )

Hwy 3 is a must-do. But be careful, it is patrolled between 36 and Weaverville.

Frankly, I'd blow off 299. Too much traffic. I'd simply ride 36 one direction and then turn around and ride it back the other. Remember, the road is completely different in the other direction.

But, if you've got the time, ride 36 to 3, take 3 all the way up to Yreka, continue north for 12 miles to 96, and then come back all the way down 96 to 299. After all that, you might be ready for a more relaxed pace on 299.

Enjoy!

Oh, and if you do decide to do the long route, there's a decent hotel at the Hoopa Indian reservation. Spend the night there, take a swim in the river, then head out the next morning.

"Long route", no kidding! Google says, 11 hr. 36 min. Am sure I could trim some with a few spirited-paced miles, but would have to be up at the butt crack of dawn to complete that in one day. And looking at BanjoBoy's warning of possible snow, I'll eschew the northern route until weather appropriate. I hate cleaning the bike.

But intriguing. I've been up as far as Trinity Airport on CA-3 via car. The more suggestions, the more I want to explore.

Great posts everyone. Looking forward to the Feb. 17-19th weekend and will plot and plan up until then. Keep `em coming.

revnort-

I'm headed to watch softball that Friday, might as well serve one up for the haters.

Since I own one, obviously frequent the dealerships. Never have I seen more ways to skin a cat, errr, tools and equipment to clean a motorcycle in all my born days.

Me? Just don't want all that Milwaukee iron to rust. Or the Chinese nuts and bolts. Was fiddling with a hex bolt the other day and found a metric key fit better. Didn't know if that was a result of using the proper tool or sloppy HD fitment.

I'm starting to give an over-night some thought. Since I had free lodging at daughter's place, was only considering loops. Now...

Scenario a plenty. 36 and 3 at present the prime directives.
