where do I start

I went to do some normal maintenance this morning on my Husky 450smr. First off, pulled the plug to drain the oil and look what I found attached to the magnet on the plug. Anyone have a clue as to where I should start looking to find the problem. Its a metal fragment rather rough and not from a polished piece within the motor. I have written down the length and width in photo and provided a ruler as well. The piece is about 1mm thick.

Thanks in advance

Justin

Anyone. To me this says that the motor is on its way out. The real bitch of the situation is that parts are not even available for husky because of the receint purchase by BMW. I cannot even buy a valve cover gasket.

I can't see the part well enough to accurately guess, but I'd bet on either a transmission dog piece, or locating dowel. Personally, if the bike's running well, I'd just keep an ear on it until the next oil change and see if you get any more 'presents'.

Hey Justin, next oil change get a magnet stick and fish through the oil filter screen port. See if you find more metal pieces and we can figure out what it is by peicing it together. Hopefully you dont find anything else in there.

Well, I have not replaced the oil so I can fish around a little. I pulled the screens and nothing came out with them, but I will go back in with a magnet, and see what I can find.

Looks like a corner of gear tooth or corner of a gear dog as someone suggested. One hard shift at some point probably caused it. If that's all it is, I'd say you're good for a long time.
