When you realize, "I should have ridden..."

Today I decided to take advantage of a Saturday when my wife was at work all day to do something special for her. We had been in SF yesterday and she saw a purse she liked at a store. She decided to keep looking, and when she came back to grab the one she liked, it was gone. Seeing as I had dropped the ball this year and didn't go all out for Mother's Day like I should have, I set out to a local location of that particular store to find what she had wanted.

I hopped in the car, dropped the wife off at work, and headed to said store. Luckily, they had the purse...but not the matching wallet. I knew the matching wallet would really put the surprise over the top and complete the ensemble and win me back some serious points. Like I said, I really dropped the ball on Mother's Day. So I decided to venture out to another location of this particular store and see if they had said wallet. Keep in mind that this particular chain does not carry the exact same items at every location so a phone call to check inventory would likely have been fruitless.

I had a few other tasks on my list that would hopefully further my point-gaining potential once the wife returned home so I decided to leave directly from the local store to the one further out. This is where I realize I went wrong.

I arrived at the store, and much to my displeasure, they did not have the matching wallet in stock. In addition to thinking a phone call might have been worth a try...I also thought to myself something that is haunting me to this very minute.

I should have taken the bike.

Sure, I'd have had to head back home in the opposite direction, change into my gear...but what ended up being a fruitless quest via a boring trip in our boring sedan...could have been summed up on a positive note with a general consensus of, "At least I got to ride."

To put things in perspective, 90% of my riding lately has been commuting to and from work. The same freeway, or if I'm not on a time crunch, the same back roads leading to one of two destinations. Very infrequently have I gone for a ride...just to ride. And I've got to say, the realization that I just missed a chance to enjoy some non-commute related seat time really made me realize how much I do enjoy riding, especially when it's done with no time constraints or specific destination in mind.

Driving for me used to be the end-all, be-all activity. When I was a child, I *lived* for the times my dad let me sit in his lap as we pulled the car into the garage. I would watch him leave for work not just to see him off but because I loved watching the car drive off. I took paper plates and cut them up to resemble steering wheels, then mimic my dad's every move as I sat behind him in the left rear seat. Getting my license and taking mom's car out for the first time was an event of biblical proportions for 17-year old me.

13 years later, I still enjoy driving, but it's become so routine and commonplace that it doesn't give me the thrill it once did. (Driving a Honda Civic may have something to do with that, but that's another story) Riding, on the other hand, while still giving me a way to get from point A to B...still offers something that driving a car just can't seem to provide.

tl;dr, before you go with what's convenient and just take the car...think to yourself...maybe I should ride.

I bought a motorcycle BECAUSE of those romantic notions of 'shoulda'.

Then later I got to be a two wheeled hero. Like when my wife went to a conference two cities away and forgot her glasses and presentation props. BOOM! Tank bag and gentleman's express got her gear to her in record time.

Or like when on vacation in Colorado and in our mountain location something was needed from town. BOOM! I was on the steed and fetched the required supplies.

I coulda' taken the cage but romantic notions feed my fantasy.

Ditto. Every time I decide to commute to work via carpool/bus and get stuck in traffic, I tell myself I should've ridden. In the morning traffic is not too bad because I have to be at work by 7am. The afternoon commute home on a motorcycle is where the real time savings can be as much as 30 minutes.

Any trip is not a wasted trip if done on a motorcycle. I just call it a ride even if whatever the original purpose was totally fails.

And your other problem is that your other choice is a boring sedan. That's why my other car is a convertible. At least I can still enjoy the drive as long as the weather is reasonable - the same weather that makes a motorcycle ride good. :cool

I don't have that dilemma because I don't use the bike for anything other than riding.

I don't have or want luggage carriers and frankly with all the heavy gear that I wear when I ride, the most that I'm going to do when I'm out riding is stopping at a restaurant for a quick bite.

Leather jacket with chest and back inserts, knee/shin guards under pants, SIDI ADV/touring boots....all that is not really compatible with strolling around shopping.

Nice move; I'm sure your wife will appreciate it.

Riding the same route 90% of the time will stunt your improvement as a rider IMHO.

Definitely need to change it up on weekends at least...assuming the wife will let you ride on weekends.

That's exactly how I felt as I sat in the car driving home: this was a wasted trip and it wouldn't have been on the bike.

One of the agreements my wife and I made when I bought my bike was that she then could get the car she wanted. So when we had to trade in our two-door when the baby came, she went with the Civic. I tried for at least the Si model but she doesn't want to/know how to drive stick.

So did you get that matching wallet?

Nope. :(

This stretch of only commuting has been an exception to the norm. I actually had two opportunities to ride on Saturday that my wife was surprised I didn't take. She typically has no issue with me going out to ride especially if it's a WWR event. Since I work 9-5 M-F the weekends are typically my only chance to ride. These next 2-3 weekends coming up will be pretty chock full of riding.

matching wallet

Scoping all stores in the area.
Calling before you launch your mission always keeps the possible places down to the necessary.
However when it comes to just riding maybe we don't care about hitting every possible place why?? cause we are riding.:ride
Look online for the matching missing piece ,and order it that way.
I'm 99% positive you'll find it, and have it mailed to her.

I'm proud of myself for remembering to ride today. Normally Monday's the lightest traffic day so I don't bother but...

Beyoncé, going to be at Levi's Stadium tonight, so 237 might be teh suk.

It would be so-o-o much easier to get right behind the OP's message if we could split/filter here on the other coast. When you have to sit in traffic regardless of what you're sitting on it's too easy to decide to take a four-wheel something. So much for our legislators getting behind congestion/pollution/consumtion reduction.

I'm confused, is your wife also your mother? How did you drop the ball on Mother's Day?
