Are you talking sushi, or sashimi?

Frankly, I've gotten picky enough that I'd rather just buy sushi-grade fish at the fishmarket or a high end grocery store and make my own sashimi with a side of rice.

Sushi rolls are particularly easy to make on your own, you can even find nori at Safeway these days. Just buy Japanese rice and when it's cooked put some rice wine vinegar in it for that tangy taste.

There's a place in Sausalito that's supposed to be out of this world. Anyone know the name? Supposedly, you have to show up before 5 to get a table.

YES...it's on Lighthouse Dr....very small restaurant and sometimes long wait but the food is worth it....

for a different than mainstream sushi, 22 and clement on the corner has a small family style japanese food.....

for good sashim, there's a place on lombard which I admit is good but don't let the guy kid you....his stuff is frozen and delivered from South San Francisco....

In Berkeley go to Kirala, best of the best. In Oakland go to the place on Broadway just above Jack London Square, great prices. Right next to Nation's Hamburgers.

Kirala is an experience you should do once in your life if you love Sushi.

I'm dying to try this place, just based on this review:

http://sfweekly.com/Issues/2006-07-19/dining/eat.html

For very high quality sushi in SF that won't break the bank, I like Sanraku in the Four Seasons on Nob Hill (stay away from Sanraku in the Metreon :barf)

For reasonably priced but still quite solid sushi, I like Miyabi on Church and Zaoh on Mission.

For really really cheap but mediocre...er, don't ask :blush

Anyway, it depends on your definiton of "great". Some people swear by Blowfish but I can't stand the clientele. Enh. Everyone's got a favorite. Eat at lots of 'em and pick the one you like best :)

Also, yelp.com is a great reference.

Shit....sounds awesome. I think Frankie's treating there once she lands her 6-figure gig.

Bishop, if you do try the place Frankie mentioned, be sure to report back with your review. So far, it sounds the best except for that Sausalito place. I know that place is bucks though....But a trusted source of mine says it's the best in the area.

Oh yeah, Bishop, I cannot say enough good things about Midori in Sunnyvale on El Camino.

Great value for sure but not sure if it's worth the trip out of the city. I am a bit of a sashimi snob. For the money, you can't go wrong at Midori though.

Try Kisaku of San Mateo or Tomokazu of Burlingame if you're in the peninsula. Good solid places though I'm not sure if it's worth the trip out of the city.

Frankie, have you tried Furo Sato in Campbell yet? :drool

I just found a neat Japanese restaurant on Van Ness between Sutter and Post. It’s called Kyoto.

Sushi Bune on Bush at Sansome is very popular at lunchtime too.

I've always been curious about the dining etiquette at sushi restaurants. Anyone care to help a crackah out?
First what are they saying to you in Japanese as you enter/exit the restaurant, and is it considered polite to repeat that back to them? I just smile and bow my head a little like a doofus. :toothless
