What kind of bird is this?

It's not my fault...
My dogs chased this little guy from the deck to the dogroom. I managed to get him to a corner in the backyard where he'll be safe. He flies a little but seems contents to hop away from danger. For you BARF bird experts...what kind of bird is it? Thought it was a sparrow but his feet look a little more aggressive...but I dont know squat about birds...only giving them.

If hes still in the corner of the yard I'll get him some bird food or something...

Looks like a Kestrel, a raptor.

Can he fly? These guys don't live on the ground. If so he's probably injured.

Can you call the Raptor Center at UC Davis? They may be able to help if you're nearby.

It's a kestrel and it's likely a young one still learning to fly. Let him be and he should be fine. If not, take him to a rehab center.

Theres a wildlife rehab center in Suisun. If he's still in the corner tomorrow I'll try and trap him and bring him in. I blocked off half the backyard so he has room to roam now. Vacation started today...if I was at work I'm certain the dogs would have gotten him.

I have a young crow that left the nest 3+ weeks ago. He/she spent a lot of time on the ground hopping around while the parents brought food--like a couple of weeks. It's now able to hang out in trees, but still getting food from the parents. If a crow takes that long, I'd guess that a bigger bird would take even more time?

Don't try to catch it before you call a rehab. Odds are, they'lull have the means to catch it themselves, to keep the stress on the bird to a minimum.

This happens a lot. Don't take him in unless he can't get out of a bad situation.

He moved from the corner ground to the yard up to the bottom runner on the fence 10ft away. I'll leave him alone for a few more hours...see if he moves on.

If not, their diets consist of large insects as well as mice and other small rodents. :thumbup

Little dude was chilling in a large bush we have in the corner. Now hes back in the corner on the ground. He could have been there as I ran the drip system.

I read they eat earthworms...I'm gonna go buy him some and leave some water out.
