What is the thinking of BMW engineers?!

That's only if you are ok with cutting the carpet :laughing

The dealer is ok with it :laughing the work instructions tell you to cut it lol

ha, fun--apparently quite true... so, not a big deal I guess...

I cut a hole in the floor of my Blazer instead of dropping the tank to swap out the fuel pump. :laughing

They told me the cost to cut and the cost to remove the seat. iirc, $400 or $1000.

It took about an hour to do myself :laughing

Engineering at it's finest

Probably what I would have done with a Blazer too! Kind of shocked it wasn't behind a cutout.... well it is now :laughing

In the 80s, Audi was putting the battery under the rear seat. (At least in the 5000)

I think my mother in law's Touareg has the battery under the front seat.

My Ducati Diavel had the battery behind the belly pan at the very bottom of the bike.

I'm not sure why OP is surprised at the trunk battery. It's pretty common.

It is. Porsche Cayenne too. Now riddle me this: battery is dead, need to move the ELECTRIC seat all the way forward and aft in order to access the UNIQUE hardware holding the seat in place. How do you change the battery?

Good times working on German cars I tell ya.

I'm sure you already know, but I've used a cordless drill on the seat actuation cable.

I dunno. That 2021 M3/M4 Competition they unveiled yesterday looks pretty awesome.

Not a fan of the grill. I'm honestly not even sure what they're doing over there. its like the engineers have just discovered CAD and are stretching and cutting things while they experiment with their toolkit :laughing

I went to give my friend a jumpstart for his BMW SUV. We spent over 30 minutes looking for the battery. Then his little 10 year old brother used google and showed us on his iPhone a diagram of the battery located IN THE BACK OF THE SUV. Wow! Big wow! I guess the German engineers have a weird sense of humor.

Yes, we are both engineers and we both feel really stupid not looking it up online earlier.

This has been standard on BMWs for decades. Sedans and Coupes too.:wow

I would love to get a 540i wagon, but I don't wanna deal with all the other BS involved with an old BMW.

Thank you DD, you've unrestored my faith in engineers for the day.

I mean I've had software engineering professors who couldn't figure out how to connect their laptop to the overhead projector in the room using the built-into-the-podium-already-supplied HDMI / displayport cable...

I do, yes. The question was mostly rhetorical to illustrate some of the absurdness of getting to the battery on some German cars.

Here's an Italian example: Ferrari 360 with electronic door locks, keyless entry only. Alarm drained the battery. Battery is in the passenger compartment under the passenger foot well. That was a fun one to figure out.:nchantr
