What is the sportiest sport-touring motorcycle?

I beg your pardon? :nchantr

It'll still keep a quick pace in the canyons, but it's really a flying couch and ADV bike as opposed to a sport-tourer.

I'm hard-pressed to believe that anything with an upright seating position, high ground clearance, and 19" front can be considered especially sporty.

Ducati SuperSport or the R1200RS would be my choice. Not sure I can bring myself to consider the RS - maybe in another 10 years. To me, the SuperSport is what I think the modern VFR could have been if Honda actually put some effort into it.

I have been many times impressed by the pace an R1200GS can be ridden at with the right rider in the saddle.
I realize that's a very relative statement, but I'm also sure many here can corroborate.
In my book bikes like the S1000XR and the 1200 Multi are the most accomplished sporty sport-tourers.
Nowadays my street riding is almost exclusively commuter miles and my 72k miles and going strong barge is doing a great job, but I often sigh and lust over the ever better and more enticing BMW GS panzer.

Damn I was gonna offer up my Real Strom! Early this century I rode a BMW GS mostly so I could justify an aerostitch. I then rode an early FZ1 followed by the Real Strom. I’ve got a Tiger 1050 now so it might be that I alternate between sport tourers and adventure bikes? I like to think I’m a sporty guy and generally I’ve ridden all these bikes on the the same highways without regard to it’s specific design. Comfort, position and weight are definitely a consideration. In a couple years I’m probably looking for a well setup Tracer GT. You’ve hinted that the decisions been made so is this just a tease?:)

+1 FJ-09/Tracer 900GT

FJ-09 Needs suspension to be truly good, but the motor is just rowdy and encourages bad behavior. It's a little upright for _really_ sporty riding, but I've had mine on Sonoma and Thunderhill a couple times, good enough to run a decent B pace.

I’ll throw my hat in for the Busa. I think with risers it’s as comfy as a VFR. It’s actually a very good sport tourer.

Neither will be as comfy as the Tracer. One of the things that makes it comfy is cruise control.

The Tracer sitting position has no effect on throwing the bike around. I can use two styles of body positions riding it. The sit upright, stay in the seat and just lean with the bike.

Or, I can use track style. Get my body into position early for the turn, use the inside peg to hold me up as I move my butt off the seat, with leaning forward into the turn. Allowing me to be light on the bars.

Month ago I did a 9 hour, 440 mile ride from the Bay Area, through the Sierras and back.

The only discomfort I devolved was due to age and that was very minimal due to the sitting position and cruise control.

Oh.......I can do all maintenance without removing any body work. Do a oil change.........just place drain under the pan and filter, let it drain, fill with oil.......no body work removal.

Plugs.......remove tank bolts, rotate tank 180, let rest on subframe....no disconnecting wires or fuel lines, remove air box, replace plugs. Air filter....same procedure except no need to remove air box.

Many report of over 100k on the motors just following routine maintenance.

I wonder what it be like trying to hussle a busa along Jameson Creek Road...

It sounds like you just want a sport bike, but with bags. So why not just get a sport bike and put bags on it?

When you mention sport touring, upright seating and bars is what comes to mind. Also ease of maintenance. There have been a ton of good suggestions, but you seem to be stuck on the VFR and my guess is because it looks "sporty." Frankly, you already have one of the best budget sport-tourers out there, so why not just use that? I'd take a vstrom over a VFR any day.

"Sporty is as sporty does." Forest Kneepad.

I have had several Sport Touring bikes.
ST1100, ST1300, K1600GT and now a Multistrada. Unless you are on a goat road all of these bikes will move right along in the twisties. Yes, they are heavier than a sportbike. But if you are riding 500+ miles they are the bikes you need. Even a Goldwing with the right rider will move right along. Find what you like and go for it.

And yes if you are going on a longer trip a shaft drive is the way to go.

This way...That way...
Just a thought.....
"Sporty" is mostly determined by the thing on the seat, not what's under it.

Yep. It's the rider. I've been passed by several guys on GS Beemers and KTM whatevers while I was riding a sporty looking bike slowly, I guess... :laughing

I've put over 100,000 miles on various VFRs and also over 100,000 miles on a couple FJRs. The VFRs sure look more sporty, and they are a fun bike in their own way, but frankly the FJR as heavy as it is has no trouble staying with a VFR (on the street) given equal riders.

Having said that, I suspect the Tracer GT, or the Ducati SuperSport might be close to what you seem to prefer... ??

A up right seating has another advantage I really didn’t think about. It is easier to look up through up hill turns, especially one that is 180 and gains in elevation.

If your body is leaned forward, that’s not as easy to do. Puts more stress on your neck if your body is leaned forward.

(It's a great bike but sporty it ain't.)
