With great humility I must post this.

Then between about mile marker 15 - 20 an "incident" occurred :( . I looked up to give a quick wave to 2 guys going the other direction, they passed, I'm in a left turn, and wham, I am on the ground. The newly refurbished bike was laid down in a shallow culvert pointing the other direction still running. So quickly hit the kill switch and assessed myself. I'm...okay. Very pissed, but okay. Most important was nobody saw, so I immediately picked the bike up and pointed it the right direction. Freshly powder coated and now bent and trashed kickstand down, I looked over the bike. It appears to be rideable but the shifter adjust rod popped off. I got the bike started but didn't know what gear it was in. Got the shifter to shift up once then took off.Turns out it was in third cuz I rode all the way home in fourth. Hit 2 red lights so taking off in fourth takes a bit of clutch slipping.

I do not know WTF happened. I may car drive up today to analyze the scene.I think taking my eyes off the road for the wave and going in to a turn I may have hit some gravel. I waved and then I was down. There were grind marks in the asphalt 20 - 30 feet back sort of in the middle of the road so I didn't go off road initially. I wasn't in the most focused and racy frame of mind and was actually riding quite casually on the way back. I estimate 30 - 35 MPH.

Body damage to me. My left knee cap area is twice as big as the right one with a big strawberry. This is wearing proper leathers with armor. Hips are a little sore and other body parts too as they probably bent in unusual directions. No head hit.

WEAR YOUR GEAR Asphalt and that 5 grit stuff on Mines Road will tear you to pieces if you don't.

Bike damage.

The forks are tweaked. They should pop back after I loosen everything up. A little scrape on the front fender. Headlight is fukd. Dented the tach frame a bit and wires may be ground through. I just put a fresh clutch perch and lever on this bike because the last ones looked like these do now. Same with the left switch gear. Shifter linkage rod end or ??? needs replacement. Left side blinkers broken. Left rear set peg ??? maybe can touch it up. Left chamber bent up and in. Left silencer scraped. Scraped up fiberglass rear has additional scrapes. Left bar end mirror. Left (new) hand grip. More I'm sure.

Yeeeowie, Glad you are somewhat ok.
Nobody around sure sounds frightening.
Heal up!

Hope your knee heals up quick, and glad it wasn't worse.

Beautiful bike. How old are the tires? They look great, but if they are older and sat while you did the restoration, they may be an issue. Seems like you would have discovered this earlier in the ride if so.

Holy crap..
I was in a group of 4 riders and we definitely waved at you because we were nerding out about your bike in our intercoms...

You must have went down a little right after we passed. Sorry to hear you went down but thank god you're able to post this up.
Mines is not a place you want to go down.

Are we having fun yet?

Sorry to read this, Ken - a real bummer...

You said you "looked up" to wave? Often I'd wave without looking at the rider/bike I waved at, or some times with just a nod (again, without looking), when I wanted to keep my attention on something else.

Glad you are OK and not major damage to the bike, it was so pretty. I am a nodder unless I am going straight.

Nothing that a layer or two of Turtle Wax and elbow grease can't fix.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, glad you're OK too.

Well man I'm glad this isn't a rip thread. Sorry about the bike.

I remember seeing a series of pictures of a guy that went for a wave, lost his line, and crashed into oncoming traffic. It seems silly to think that the accident could've been cause by a wave, but maybe that brief moment was all it took.

I've often wondered about the safety of waves: seems like an easy thing to pointlessly distract you.

Glad you're OK

Thanks everyone. Yes I may quit the waving. I'm a bit anti-social anyways so...

The embarrassing post (I never crash) was partly to get the message out that everyone already knows.

Please wear decent riding gear. I suspect it may have saved me a hospital trip. Or at a minimum a lot more pain and suffering.

Also, there are some folks that seem to think they will never crash. It can happen.

Ride safe :ride

Thanks for sharing your story, I can't even imagine how you must be feeling about your fresh pride and joy going for a tumble. :(
Yes, ATGATT!
I went down last fall on the track and learned that good gear will reduce your chance of injury, not necessarily prevent it. Just think what the results might of been with what we used to wear back in the day.
Heal up soon, both you and your Yammy!

Sorry this happened to you and relieved that you are okay-ish. A cautionary tale for the rest of us. Thank you for posting.
