21K since May! Wowzer! You be doin' some serious miles! I never did more than 10K a year when I was commuting.

Thanks for more insight into these versatile bikes! Test ride time!

Cheers! :port

MV Augusta

What about the MV Augusta 800 Turismo Veloce ? Great sports tourer, matching hard bags, 800cc triple, up and down quick shifter, TFT display, 8 levels of TC, ABS and slipper clutch. I just bought a new 2016 left on the showroom floor for $12,800. Fantastic bike...think lighter more energetic multistrada.

I would love that bike, a beauty for sure :thumbup .. just not sure it would fulfill true sport touring ambitions on the more practical side.

You did notice what bikes I have now? :teeth My Ducati Hyperstada is pretty close to the MV. I do love triples. (owned 3 Triumph Tigers)

I've got $6500 into my ducati ... but, IMO the MV is still a bargain at $13K.
Italian Art.

I do love the lightweight and excellent handling of my modified Hyperstrada ... just not sure of it's long term health. :( Could be similar issues with MV's? I know early examples had issues ... no idea about current machines?

So far the Versys 1000 gets the nod. Test ride done. Just working out details.
It's not super fast or deluxe, few electronics, more a work horse ... and hopefully a better Vstrom (which I put 90K on!) Perfect Old Man bike?

Thanks for the suggestion!

Too bad..

...the BMW R1200RS is priced more like a Porsche than a motorcycle.

Let me also add that for those of us who are short of leg, and long on age the FJR is far too beastly, coming in at a whopping 700lbs, with much of the weight carried up high. Throw in the somewhat towering seat height and it's hard to love. I bought mine thinking those things weren't deal breakers and that I'd get used to it.

I have done a few longish trips, and when it's rolling, youre happy to have it's horsepower and comfort, but at camping spots or anywhere you need to backup or ride over rocks, gravel...
Then there's the possibility you might have to pick it up. Bring a friend!

If they would build the FJR with a 500lb curb weight and a twin engine... like the R1200RS....then it might be the perfect tourer ....

Thats terrible to hear about your FJ09. With a proper windscreen [ I have opted for a small minimlist screen ] and proper suspension setup the bike is an absolute beast for sport touring. I have upgraded my seat and the windscreen and thats it so far. Had the suspension properly setup for my weight/riding style, 20k miles of touring and sport riding in the last year with my FJ. I have a short 29-30" inseam even though I am 6'0" and it fits me like a glove. The only other bikes I considered were the versys 1000, vstrom1000. Hondas afrifan twin looks decent- but the FJ is the king of the 3 for staying 100% on the road like I do.

I'm going to echo this same thing. FJ is certainly the most sporty, lightest and cheapest of any bike in its class. Put the money you save into suspension and you will have an incredible bike.

I'm biased as I have an FJ with full Ohlins, aftermarket windscreen, ECU flash, and a few other goodies. This thing rips the sweepers and cruises comfortably all day long.
