USAL tips

Dookie
Hey y’all. Planning a DS trip to explore USAL in a couple weeks. Any tips from the vets?

We’ll be departing from the Bay and heading north up the coast. Default route is up 1 but interested to know if there are any roads between here and there worth detouring for.

More importantly once we’re up north and in the dirt what are some must do’s and don’ts?

Any tips/ideas are appreciated.

Thanks!

Tons of roads between the Bay and Usal depending on how many days you have. What's your overnight destination(s)? Hard to know where to start.....

Lost Coast....
- Off Usal the out-and-back to Needle Rock is fun.
- Take the Shelter Cove Rd west for gas and food.
- Continue north onto Kings Peak Rd for more dirt. Eventually it runs into Mattole Rd which will take you by Honeydew and Patrolia where there is gas and food. Stay on Mattole Rd either into Ferndale or onto Bear River Ridge Rd (spectacular vistas).

If you've never done it, ride Coleman Valley Rd off hwy 1 up to Occidental, then take Bohemian Hwy to Monte Rio, then King Ridge Rd out of Cazadero to Skaggs. Then either drop down to Stewarts Pt on Skaggs. or make a right on Skaggs and take Annapolis Rd back over to Hwy 1.

Dont ride it in the rain...
Couple of summer pics...
It will be about 2 hours dirt riding with no help!

Little late to the party but watch out for inexperienced dual sport groups coming at you out of control.

This has happened every time I've ridden Usal. Last year a KTM put me in a ditch, fortunately the Beta is an amazingly agile beast and just popped right on out. When I caught up with my other half he said the same thing happened to him. The look of terror on the target fixater's face, and the fact that he did it twice is more frightening than diving into a ditch to avoid him.

TL/DR
Watch out for oncoming traffic 2 or 4 wheeled.
