USAA Coverage - Bad News Folks!!

This is towards everyone here that has USAA coverage for their motorcycle or Auto. I was recently in a little accident and filed a claim with USAA to get my gear and bike taken care of. The USAA claims representative then tells me that the policy changed back in December of 2017, and the limit for personal property AKA motorcycle gear is been reduced to a mere $250. :wtf

That's right folks, if you have USAA, your motorcycle gear is no longer covered. It can be covered through your renters insurance or homeowners insurance but your basic Auto auto policy no longer covers gear. And it also appears but if your car is broken into you only have $250 of personal property coverage as well (stolen goods).

This deeply saddens me, as I have been a USAA customer for many many years now. But with this recent policy change I don't know if that will continue into the future.

Edit:
Your current policy may still have the $3k PP coverage, but when the policy renews it will be dropped to $250.

$250 won't even cover a decent helmet. Are they trying to incentivize people to ride without gear? That would seem extremely counter intuitive, since then they'd be paying out more for medical costs. Compared to medical bills, protective gear is couch change.

Thank you for posting this up. I've been meaning to call them and take stock of my policy and coverage, and this seems like a great thing to bring up.

Also - the personal property from theft sounds like it's normal coverage without extended/detailed coverage, but I'm going to ask about that also.

USAA is by far the cheapest and easiest/best coverage I've encountered, but they do have some weird cost-savings measures.

For a while they were not doing moto insurance in CA and farmed it out to Progressive - I believe they still might be doing that? I've been grandfathered in so my stuff is covered under USAA, but that was annoying to me when I'd call in with moto policy stuff and they'd redirect me to Progressive.

They have flip-flopped multiple times on whether they will write new policies in California, or won't. To be honest, it never occurred to me that I could claim gear on my insurance. I guess since I don't have any experience crashing :)

They have grandfathered motos that were previously covered, but new motos are shunted off to Progressive, so that sucks (beach)balls. :x

I've been a USAA customer for quite a while and their service has deteriorated, unfortunately. Damned civilians, screwing up the military again.... :mad

In CA they have to cover your helmet because it is the law to wear it.

USAA covers bikes in CA and a few other states. I was farmed out to Progressive when I was stationed on the east coast, and have nothing but good things to say about the USAA/Progressive partnership.

This new discovery of USAA coverage... Yeah..

I've been a USAA member since '94. It was only open to officers so I couldn't join as enlisted (USCG) until I went to the Maritime Academy as it's considered an OCS qualifier. After CMA I did go to USCG OCS in Yorktown. During those years the coverage really was stellar and much less expensive than anything else I could get.

Later on they opened it to all military personell (both enlisted and officer) and lately to the public. That's when it went downhill. Rates went up and coverage went down. I suspect that with a higher risk demographic they had to come in line with the others or risk going under. I still have my home and auto with them.

I recently had my MC's quoted and they came in at twice the price of Progressive with less coverage (namely the accessories like helmets, gear, luggage). I'd like to give them my business as they made insurance affordable for me as a MIDN back in the day and the couple claims I did have they were stellar performers. Unfortunatley that's not the case anymore and they are pretty similar to others. Kind of sad.

That sucks. I've had USAA for my cars forever, and have had nothing by A+ experiences with them. The only insurance that ever felt like they were on my side 100% of the time.

I too have had USAA for many, many moons since it was opened up to enlisted.

Great Service... in fact back in 98 when my car was stolen, USAA had a rental car delivered to my front door before the police showed up to take a report.

I've heard of the Progressive underwriting USAA's bikes before, but do they even tell us they are doing just that?

Makes me want to call and ask some questions.
:wtf

When I was still in Colorado, they sent me to progressive. Had a progressive card and paid them separately, so I doubt they do that.

I was told that Geico underwrote CA policies for USAA but that was a few years ago. They definitely tried to get out of Motos. CA law requires they offer moto insurance here if they want to operate as they were but they have dropped moto coverage in most states. This all per conversations I have had with them on the phone.

I didn't know it was open to the general public now? I got it when it was still officers only and their families. It's the only banking and insurance I have ever had since getting out of college. Have life insurance and renters as well. Quotes for my Tuono were cheaper by anywhere from about $200-$1500 per 6 months staying with USAA.

I guess I have my bikes covered by USAA then.
Never had them tell me anyone else was underwriting them.
Should call and do one of those checkups though.

I don't see that - I've asked for quotes from USAA twice now for coverage on our Goldwing - both times they came in almost double what we're paying for Geico...

We also got a quote for homeowner's insurance - they were within $100 of what we're paying to Farmer's so we're staying with Farmer's for now...

I had USAA for home, car, bikes, but in 2001 or so, another USAA member rear-ended me. My car had way more damage than the guy who rear-ended me, and USAA said I was 51% at fault.
I called and bitched them out, but I realized it was all about the deductable, so I got screwed. (And I was a goddam lance corporal, for fucks sake...)

I quit their shit right then, went to Farmers, and so far no problems in 17 years.
Most Insurers will give you a decent deal if you are older than dirt, own a home or 2, and never file a claim, otherwise they donkey-rape you repeatedly, until you can't get insurance at all.

Nice!

BTW, there won't even be a VA in another year, thanks to that thing in the Whitehouse, Bone-Spur War Hero.

:rofl

The VA will never cease to exist. The number of injured from the last 20 years of "war" is staggering. The gov needs to keep that out of the mainstream news...
