Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Don't you wish you were?
I got hit in my truck and I only had 15/30k coverage. While it helped and I did have health insurance. It totaled my truck (10k) and my medical costs were over 300K. I now have 100/300K coverage for uninsured motorists.

Get it, pay the $$$.

If you ever need it, it'll save your home, etc.

Max out on all coverage if you've got a new/newer bike, especially if it's still financed.

Read ALL of this thread. Hugely informative, and mad props to ThumperX. :hail

That helped, thanks for that.

Essentially if I get in a wreck where I'm injured and the other party's insurance is non-existent or medical costs exceed their liability limits, the Uninsured/Underinsured kicks in to cover the slack up to a designated level.

Now to investigate my medical insurance coverage more in depth and then figure out how crucial it will be.

I absolutely will not ride without UIM coverage. A relatively minor accident (under 15MPH) ended up costing way over the $15k minimum liability that a lot of drivers carry.

Unless you can make sure you are only hit by someone with good coverage, I'd consider it essential.

Now to investigate my medical insurance coverage more in depth and then figure out how crucial it will be.

While your medical should cover any injury, they expect to be paid back from any settlement you get. They also don't cover things like the ambulance or helicopter ride.

UIM is one thing that I absolutely will not ride without. If I can't afford the premium, I would hang up the keys until I could afford it.

Like others said, it's foolish to ride without it.

However the price is pretty high. I wanted to see if that was a consistent experience for everyone else or just a Geico thing? I'm looking at an annual premium increase of close to $1000/year for two bikes (04 RSV Fact and 03 SV650)

I have 500k/500k UIM from USAA for $380/year across 3 vehicles.

Shop your coverages around.

I have had multiple streetbikes for years and progressive has the best multiple bike discount. Right now I have 4 streetbikes. Geico is good for 2 for some people but for 4, Geico is much more expensive than progressive.
