Unexpected rain has become Squid Sighting Day

I was amazed to see as many riders who were in jeans and casual shoes in today’s commute. They were also doubly cautious as well.

Spring brings out the new riders but bad gear and poor technique will be apparent in the rain.

Been riding nearly a decade, still managed to lose traction on the front tire coming to a stop downhill because of white paint+rain. Avoid the paint like the plague. and pilot power 2ct's :)

Part of being a squid is not being prepared. Rain was in the forecast since last Friday. The weather app is probably on the top 3 of most viewed apps during the week.

What's your commute? I drove today, and usually see 6+ bikes, 580W to 24E to 680E (Concord), didn't see any bikes today. And it was just sprintzing when I went to work.

Remember that it takes a lot of rain to completely bring all the oils and contaminants up from the asphalt AND wash them away. What usually happens, most especially with light rains like we're getting, is the crap gets brought to the surface and then it stops raining and the crap settles on the top of the road surface. Then the water dries up, leaving an invisible layer of slippery stuff on a road that appears clean and full of traction.

Be careful out there!

I've seen maybe one bike on my commute in the last 2 days, instead of the 8 - 12 in previous weeks. Quite a few cyclists out in Berkeley though, they seem pretty fearless.
