TTR230 carb problem

Hey All. I have an 05 yamah TTR 230

I'm haveing problems with accerlation. The bike boggs down, like it is starved for fuel or something. then it sputters and will eventually pick back up. then you shift and the same thing happens again. In all gears. sometimes it back fires.

bought it used with 10 hours on it. ran great when i got it. started to slowly run like crap. did all the normal maintenance, oil filter, spark plug, air filter, chain, etc.....nothing worked. Took the carb apart and cleaned it, and to see if i had a clogged jet or something.....it all looked great.

took it to the shop and they drilled out plug to get to the fuel/air mixture screw. made some adjustment. And there is some improvement, but i am still having problems on the top end, 2 gear and up.

I heard ttrs are notorious for these kinda problems.

Should I rejet it???

any suggestions on how to fix..

PS the needle is not adjustable. I can go up on the main jet.

I posted in this thread cause it is a dirt bike problem and wanted to target dirt bike riders.

dont know if it should be in the "garage" area.

Sounds like your starving for fuel.
First thing is check the gas cap. You should be able to blow thru the vent hose, if you can't blow air thru it, start the bike up with the cap loose & see if that helps.
Second thing is unhook the fuel line, turn the petcock on. Fuel should flow freely.
Third thing is check that none of the vent lines attached to the carb are clogged, kinked or melted shut.
fourth thing is remove the main & pilot jets, squirt carb cleaner thru them followed by compressed air, also check the float height & float needle. Needle should move freely...

thanks, I tried all of that, blew out all the stuff on the carb, cleaned it, checked teh fuel line,
Didnt try the gas cap.


I took it back to the shop today and the made an adjustment on teh carb, the fuel mixture and leaned it out.

It ran fine on the pavement. As soon as i got it home and rode it on the rough ground, it started to run like crap again.

it is the bumps that make it run rough. Some thing must be loose some where.......

Did you carefully check the float level & float needle?
A sticky float needle or the float level being too low will cause it to hesitate over bumps.
Compressed air is a MUST when cleaning jets, carb cleaner alone won't cut it.
Been there a few (Dozen) times, and I've worked on that same carb your running...

the bike is fixed, It wasnt the carb at all. Well sort of, the adjustments helped but over all it was a loose wire on the battery. It was vibrating and causeing the bogging while i was ridieng on bumpy ground.

a damn loose wire.......I am retarded....


I am glad it's fixed now, and i didnt pay anymore money to teh shop.


which brings me to my next point, stupid mechanic.....took it to them 3 times and they couldnt fix it. .not very happy with Northbay power sports....AKA jim & jims
