Trump advocating Harley owner boycott

"No Government regulations! Let businesses be free to make money without Government intervention"!

"Harley is trying to shift production to stay profitiable! Government! Stop them"!

I know facts don’t matter anymore but if I were HD - I’d very clearly make public the financial implications of keeping production in the US vs moving overseas with current tariffs.

This is the same bullshit hypocrisy crying we get from the MC crowd on so-called profiling. "Leave us alone! No new laws!" and then "Cops are mean! We need a law to keep them from being mean to us!"

Harley-Davidson isn't "moving production out of America." Like many companies in all kinds of manufacturing, they periodically make moves to optimize their business, financially, operationally, etc, and in this case that includes moving some production to avoid tariffs (although this may well have already been in the works for other reasons).

Harley-Davidson isn't moving all production to other parts of the world, and anyone who boycotts the company based on that is an uninformed moron—and that's not even getting into the question of what's really an American bike (or an Italian bike, or German bike, and so on and on and on). Things haven't been that simple in a long time.

They did. Claimed they were set to lose $100 million.

... just like on so many issues, Mr. Trump does
not speak for all H-D riders/fans ...

... pray H-D will weather our Presidential
tariff war and raise Phoenix-like leaner-and-meaner with
electric bikes and a new street bike that can
compete in World Superbike ... how cool would that be? :party

Good post.

The single biggest deal of Trump is his tariffs IMHO. I’m not in favor. Hopefully, all of it is negotiating ploy.:(

Reverse psychology. I want to buy a Harley to spite Trump.

Just as well. Most of the true blue red, Harley fans that are talking about boycotting all hate the new Softail bikes anyways. And they damn sure hate the soon to be released Livewire and any of that new water cooled stuff that’s coming down the pipe.

Sure Harley’s best seller will be the Street Glide for still a awhile to come. But between the new Softail line and what’s coming down the pipe, it really looks like H-D is trying to reboot and go after much younger customers.

For the first time in like ever, quite a few of Harley’s newest shirts and jackets are “slim fit” which absolutely is not for the typical old school Harley customer.

H-D is not doing anything that they had not already planned and actually talked about in their 2017 Earnings Report. Shutting down the KC plant, "optimizing manufacturing" (i.e., increasing automation and reducing overall employee count), increasing capabilities for their plant in Thailand (they also have plants in Brazil, India, Australia, etc.)

Domestic sales are shrinking and international sales are growing. Tariffs already existed (much lower but they were there) and so the H-D board and management team planned accordingly to reduce costs and implement a plan to gain international market share in the most cost effective way possible.

Seems that they are really making hay over it publicly because they are getting called out by an unpopular (in many circles) politician.

I don't doubt that they may "lose" $100 million in terms of that being an added cost of goods sold. But they shouldn't stoop to the level of our politicians and pretend they are doing it because of the increase in tariffs. If the tariffs went up by 5x (I believe that is about correct, I think it was 6% and is now 31%), then apparently they were willing to "lose" $20 million? Nope, they weren't and that's why they had already planned everything they are now doing before the tariffs came about.

'Slim fit' a marketing term used for cloths in normal sizes. Most of the normal sizing sold in the U.S. are vanity sizes, large solid as medium, etc.

Just sounds like they stopped selling fat cloths marketed as normal clothing.:rofl

Trump just tweeted that all good, red-blooded, patriotic 'Bikers for Trump' should boycott Harley Davidson, shit-can their Harleys, and buy good, red-blooded, patriotic Urals.

The Hell Angles are not getting behind this boycott so the image of the outlaw bikes on a Harley is not likely to be altered by trump.
