Total Longshot: Spare Givi Key?

FoolishMortal

I went out for a quick ride today. Several bumpy roads, minor speedcrimes and flaccid wheelies later, I got back, went to open the trunk and realized that I didn't have the luggage keys. :wow

I remembered opening the trunk, putting in my phone and closing the trunk, but I didn't remember following my ritual of pulling out the keys and putting them in a pocket. Argh! :mad

I've done some research and it seems that shops that sell Givi stuff occasionally have spare keys laying around. If you work in such a shop and there's a #006 in the pile, let me know! I can trade for some quality candy. :gsxrgrl

TIA :teeth

I checked. 4 different key numbers, one of them was off by 1, but no.

If you don't find a #006 here, hopefully a locksmith can make one for you from the lock in your case.

For the one Givi case I use now I only have a single key. And I've left it in the case while riding a few times over the years.

Thanks for checking. :thumbup

With a little research, I found that the keys for 001 through 200 use common automotive accessory blanks. I'm hopeful that my preferred locksmith can hook me up this week.

Unfortunately, the key for my BMW side bags was attached. I don't even want to know what that's going to cost me... :x

Don't you use the ignition key for the BMW side bags?

Its pretty easy to replace the lock cyclinder if you can't get a key made. Need to open the case first, but Givi are real easy to pop open even when locked.

I got the bags separately from the bike. Different keys. 😒

I took my spare (original) key to a locksmith and he was able to match a blank pretty closely. I now have a second Givi key that works! It takes a bit to get it to turn, but he can refine it a little. :cool

The Givi key was easily sorted, but getting a replacement for the BMW saddlebags key is, predictably, more difficult. Anyone know about getting hold of a BMW key blank?

I've seen people leave their keys in cases before.

FWIW, what I do is - unlock with the key, pop the release button to open the case and then take the key out immediately, before opening the case.

Yes. Contact your friendly local BMW dealer. I've bought blanks of an OEM parts website once.

Or, try this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DDH73V0?tag=duckduckgo-ffab-20&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1

Depends what year/make you have.
Brilliant! I found a seller in the US and bought two blanks. The gent at my local shop was, um, unsure of how to get a blank for me. Buying online was quick, easy (so far) and inexpensive.

I have a similar process. As some of my friends say, “It works if you work it.” In this case, I didn’t stick with the program and it’s costing me time and money. :nchantr

Either what TWT said or you can get the locks re-keyed. I was never able to start my engine with the key still in the cases. They have a little plastic bag with a couple stamped out lock shims. The dealer matched them to my key when I bought the cases.
