To lube or not to lube

Ducati M900 dry clutch. Open basket

Do you lube either end of the pushrod? (Slave/throwout besring) or keep it dry?
If so, what do you use?

Check the throwout bearing to make sure that it is working properly.

I had one fail on my ST2 and ended up destroying the slave before I had it figured out. The Ducati throwout bearings are cheap and easy to replace.

it feels like it spins pretty freely

I get a little squeal sometimes from the open basket side when I release the clutch at "launch". Not sure what it's from but it's annoying me. I'm gonna pull it apart, clean everything and go from there. Maybe replace the tob just to be safe

The rod is supposed to be stationary and the throwout bearing at the pressure plate spins. The OEM throwout bearings weren't very good. This is exacerbated when the customer goes with an open clutch cover as it dries it out faster and accumulates more grit from the road. What happens is the bearings fails to rotate (or it flat out seizes) and the push rod spins and basically drills out through the slave. You have two alternatives: one is to do frequent checks and maintenance on the OEM bearing and the other is to put an aftermarket one in there and forget it. This is a known issue on all dry clutch Ducati. Do a search it will turn up what I wrote above. Whether or not the noise your hearing is an indication of premature failure is a matter of speculation but certainly your on the right track to take it apart before it costs you more money.

I always used a closed clutch cover and had to replace the bearing every time I changed the clutch as it would have seized from all the dust from the friction plates wearing. I ended up drilling some holes in the clutch cover to vent all the dust.

i put light grease on both sides of the pushrod, so if the rod does spin it will not cause the slave seal to fail.
