Tire damage question

Darkness!

Where's the kick starter?
Picked up a screwdriver in my rear tire about a block away from the house last night. Should I check with the shop to see if they'll pro-rate me on a replacement? The tire only has about 3k miles on it. Plenty of tread left. Or am I hosed and have to pony up for the full cost?

So, YOU drove over a screwdriver while YOU were operating YOUR bike near where YOU live and you're asking us if the shop should replace the tire for free? Why would you think that they would "prorate" it? After 3000 miles, no less? :wtf
Pony up, get it patched from the inside with a proper mushroom patch and move on with your life man. Or better yet, learn to do it yourself at Moto Guild and save money AND gain knowledge. Win,win.

Doesn't look like a manufacturing defect ... did you purchase a tire protection plan that cover hazzards?

I did not.

Wow...ease back a bit, man. The tire has at least another 3-4k miles of tread wear on it. I wasn't thinking of asking for a free tire. I was thinking of asking for them to shave some off the price. It's $250 tire I was hoping they'd shave off $50 or so.

Never hurts to ask about a discount.

Uniseal-250 inside-out tire plug/patch, no guarantees, but worth a try.

after plugging, I'd think twice of hitting deep into triple digits (if it's the cb1000?) If it's one of the smaller bores, might be ok.

I just think this way; the tires are the only thing between your skin & the road. If in doubt, replace it. It's the safe way...

Or, could always plug it & use it up at a night at the drags....(burnout city.) :teeth:

I wasn't actually ranting, Or shouting. I used the the "ALLCAPS" only to highlight how the shop isn't responsible for how and where you ride your bike. That was really my only goal there. :thumbup

Thanks, Daniel, I did not realize plugging moto tires was an acceptable option. Same with Robbie's input. I'll check with the shop.

Not a bad idea, Dave. Practice my burnout skillz!
I rarely take it into triple digits. Just not enough room during most commutes. If it happens it's a momentary rip.

Cool. :)
Never hurts to ask as Robbie pointed out. Worst they can say is "no." I've got some info now that I'd like to ask about at the shop.

Many thanks to everyone who responded. :thumbup

So, if you buy a pound of hamburger at Safeway, eat half of it, and then take the other half back after it went bad and ask for a discount, how do you think that will go?

Yeah, you can ask but what do you think that will do to your relationship with the shop?
I can hear it now, one of the techs talking to one of the other techs. "Can you believe that dude wants a discount because he fucked up one of his tires?"

Remember, "plug" is really a patch with an integrated nipple that's part of it and installed from the inside. Have a pro do it. Too many tire patches get carried away with the grinding wheel. And remember that a tire with a patch always goes down at least one speed rating. Stick to riding normal speeds, wear out the tire this winter, replace in spring.

I've been going to the same shop for the past 9 years. I'm hoping they'd take that into consideration. I've given them plenty of business and hope to continue to do so.

Thanks for the perspective, Jeff.

I did not realize it could be plugged/patched. I've picked up a nail and screw before but didn't even blink at putting on a new tire and paying full for it because the tires were either at or near the wear bars.

That is a perfect candidate for a plug. I've used those rope plugs up to 140mph with no issues, had them in tires for over a year and 5000 miles. They're solid.
