Tips for riding at night

Warning: Do Not Engage
I recommend AUX LED headlamps (mine are fender mounted so they turn as the bike does) and flashing brake lights (like Hyperlights). Additionally HID headlamp kit can't hurt.

I would also go as far to say that many cagers don't see well at night and are just winging it...meaning that they are seeing but not totally comprehending instantly and accurately in certain situations, i.e. the infamous left turn scenario. It's evident when you see a person looking right dead at you but still turns in front of you. Ugh!

Many human beings don't see well at night.

I find vision so poor at night that I just won't ride then if at all possible. The glare on the visor alone makes it hard to see.

tip: Splitting lanes at night is a bit trickier as it is harder to see side-view mirrors, particularly when everyone is on the brakes. Definitely worth slowing down a bit.

story: Coming back at night on 580 from a long ride in the Sierras. Dog tired. I noticed an odd bobble in the car ahead whose headlights I had been mooching. A couple seconds later I could pick out a black couch, partially in my lane. Having taken my cue from the car and moved over, I didn't have to do anything to avoid it.

Imagine getting killed by a couch. And some idiot bummed because he lost a couch and 30 feet of his best twine that he used to tie it onto the roof...

Just got a HID conversion and I'm really happy with it. Haven't been in fog yet, but so far it is way better than the 65-watt bulb that I had been using.
