Thoughts on Honda NSF250R

Hi there :)

It's me again. I ended up getting a 2020 R6 which I love and a KX65 mini for kart tracks. I've an opportunity to get a 2015 or 2017 NSF250R and I'm extremely curious to see if anyone in BARF has experience riding/tracking/racing the platform? Is it worth the premium? How was the upkeep/engine rebuilds/difficulty finding parts? Was the riding experience worth it?

That's a rare bike. I think you will have a hard time finding someone that has the specific answers you are looking for. My opinion is if I had the chance to buy one I would just buy it so I could add to my collection. Depends on your financial position and is it a good deal. There are some bikes that I would be willing to pay a premium for that makes no sense in reality. An RGV250 Pepsi edition or 500 Gamma Walter Wolf or a Rz500 would be another one, for nostalgia sake. You can buy for less money a better track bike like an R6 or build a race bike from any base model for less money but those aren't what I grew up wishing I had the money to be able to afford.

Will it be able to be repaired if you bin it. Probably, but you are probably going to have to search for parts and pay a premium to have them shipped from Japan.

The bike is beyond cool, I don't think anyone can argue that, but where are you going to ride it, how often and can you afford to toss it away. All my bikes I have come to terms with if I throw it away at speed can I afford to just leave it where it lands.

Thanks Ed, great points, you're absolutely right re: coming to terms with what could possibly happen. I think I am. I've never hesitated to track anything I've owned. Though I'm hoping the NSF would be a longer term "forever" bike. Just the heritage/"GP" nature of it is super enticing. I'm also kind of on a lightbike/less power fix ever since mini riding.

If you do get it, I hope you are at a trackday I am at. I would love to check that thing out. I am sure it is cool as hell.

I think sourcing parts would be the biggest challenge (not actually finding them but having someone able to ship over the smallest thing like a valve gasket seal for double the price than the actual item cost).

When I visited Thailand 10 yrs ago, I rented a two-stroke RS125. It was so fun and flickable. Only downside was that it started to get twitchy at 60-70mph.

That sounds so fun!!! Yeah I'm on the 2 stroke wagon now with my KX. A 250 2T would be fun!! A 500 2T would be death. :D
