Those Pescadero Road "Hoppy Humps"

I am sure that if you've ever ridden Pecadero Road from Pescadero to La Honda, you may have been surprised by one or both of the "Hoppy Humps".

One of them (Northbound) is on the exit of a pretty luscious corner, an uphill right-hander, and a few months ago it caught me unawares as I was somewhat buried and on the gas..... Boing, womp womp. "Jeez!"

Both of these are nearly perpendicular to the road, one of them is at a slight angle.
I contacted the county about it, and got nowhere past a polite "We'll look in to it."

I am pretty sure this is a San Mateo county maintained road, but is there another Dept of some kind in San Mateo that might consider these a thing to repair?

It's not just motorcycles that might get unsettled, bicyclists, and maybe some cars, too.

For at least the last 3-4 years those bumps have been there. I didn't ride that road until then so don't know how long. They are worse going from east to west. Recently at least 2 on the climb from Alpine toward Jones Gulch Road have been marked with pink paint like a road crew was going to come fix it. I haven't been on it in about 6 weeks so not sure if anything further has been done.

I assume they are overgrown tree roots pushing up the road. Yes they are nasty and that includes at legal road speeds. I have ridden it enough now to either know where they are or know when to look for them.

I know the bumps and the pink paint has been there for years and is fading. I have often thought it is dangerous being midturn amongst a series of seductive corners. Everytime I go through there hope no rider gets caught out and that maybe I should bring a rattle can of pavement marker and better warn fellow riders.

Would this be cheating the sport or a public service? We all ride the pace and are supposed to expect the unexpected, right?

If you have a can of spray paint handy, go paint giant phalluses on the bumps, just like some do with potholes. The county will be out there shortly thereafter.

Dont remember too much bad stuff on Pesky, but I went down Pagemill from skyline a few days, that was one bumpy MFer, felt like the Hardley became a bucking bull. Ride like you are new to to road and keep a light grip the bars.

Are we having fun yet?
I’ve been on Pescadero Creek Rd a bunch but don’t recall any unusually nasty bumps.

I do have the urge to spray-paint some nasty depressions and bumps on the road – the ones that cause mild headshake if you hit them wrong. The ones (a series of invisible depressions) I really hate were on San Antonio Valley Rd, shortly after the road flattens out and turns sharply from an easterly direction to the north toward the Junction. I knew those depressions were there but they were hard to see. I could never remember the line to avoid them all, so had to slow down thru that section. Seems like the worst ones have been filled for a while.

Now that carburetors are gone, I no logner have to [attempt] to educate myself in the fine art of jetting. You know, pilot jet, main jet, needle jet, jet needle, how big’s too big, air to fuel what? All I needed was a whole lot of time, and a long straight road.

All passed. Gone. Modern EFI just don’t need fixin’.

So now it’s clickers. Yep. Suspension. Static Sag. Other kinds of sag. Spring Rate. Rebound, Compression, high speed, low speed, velocity of the shit inside the boingers, and then to Catalyst or Evolution or SortaPlush — off to somebody who knows what the hell they’re doing to fix all the stuff I gone wrong. Make those five inches work!

And repeat. And repeat.

But to do this requires road tests on roads with bumps. Big ones and small ones, singular and plurals. And some of ‘em should be in corners because that changes the “dynamics,” whatever that means.

And so the minders of our public roads have complied. Free suspension test sites. Several. Please don’t fix all the bumpy roads, at least not right away. I gotta learn this stuff before computer suspension takes away the challenge.

The bumps the cross the entire two lanes, almost like a small speed bump?

Yeah, those are a pain, especially the ones that are mid corner. There's a handful of them and they are all very similar - speed controlling design maybe?

I ride that road so much it's become a reflex to get off the seat and flex knees pre bump. If you are riding the pace the bumps shouldn't be an issue though.

When I had my SV650 if I hit them right, you could get the rear wheel off the ground as well as the front! Couple good ruts on Tunitas that will do that for you too.

I slow down for them on my BMW though... I already had to replace the rims thanks to the idiots of Sonoma county not keeping up with their roads....

Wonder where our tax dollars really go? :dunno

:laughing I vaguely remember that thread. I also think it worked - wasn't it in the UK? My luck I'd get busted and make the local news :rolleyes

Edit: would a painted barf salute be better? :twofinger
