You know, I used to believe all of the hype about the breed being the problem. Until I was exposed to the breed. The problem is that the majority of people that have these dogs are not the type of people that should have dogs period. They treat them like shit, they raise them to be aggressive, and they parade them around like the bad ass dogs people think they are. They refuse to neuter them and they relish their aggressive traits.

It is a problem because these dogs are then bred, which could lead to the aggressiveness rubbing off on the offspring. This sucks. However, the vast majority of these dogs are not aggressive. Any dog can and will bite if provoked.

In this case, I say the fact that there is a sign stating "Beware of Dog" is a pretty good indication of the dog and dog owners mentality and demeanor. Why the fuck would you leave a six year old alone with a large dog of any breed. And why would you allow your child to play with a dog by climbing on it and whatnot.

When I was nine, my neighbor had a doberman (the feared dog of the 70's and early 80's). It had puppies. I went to pick up one of the puppies and it bit me. Did I blame the dog? No. Even at nine I knew enough to realize that it was my own stupidity for trying to take its puppy.

This immediate kneejerk reaction to ban all pitbulls is like trying to ban cars because someone had roadrage. How about this: let's not allow people with criminal records to own dogs period. You get caught breeding or fighting dogs and you go to jail.

I saw that this morning. My heart goes out to the family. :rose

The debate will continue long after Nephi's been laid to rest. I don't have an answer. The article I read described responsible owners; current rabies tag, current license, signage on property, and neighbors who described the dog as always being on a leash when out front. Devastating outcome.

Any dog can turn viscous, my daughter has a scar on her hand from the neighbors golden retriever.

This is one of my pitts with my 7 year old cousin. Yeah, one mean dog and he is a rescue...

or; every parolee will be given a kitten or a chihuahua. Loss or mishandling of one's pet is cause for parole revocation :x

Really? A sign to potentially ward off burglars is now evidence of mental health levels?

And I can't think of a single family that doesn't allow their children to play with their dogs.

+1 if anything that's a sign of a responsible owner. Some cities require it for meter readers.

I've got beware of dog signs on my fence. I've got German Shepherds. No matter how peaceful they might be, you'd have to be a stupid fuck to go anywhere near them without knowing how they behave. To leave a little kid alone with them would be pretty stupid too.

The signs mean nothing about the mentality of the owners. My signs say, Maybe you should think twice about climbing over that fence.

You and the one guy that agree with you don't own dogs, do you?

Cream Puff???
pittys make for wonderful companions. such a shame that they are getting over-bread by people that don't think about the consequences of their actions. i guess that's asking a lot from some people.
it's just so sad to see pittys at the pound!! i go there to make donations. like doggy beds, toys, treats, food. and i walk around and see the doggies and wish i just had my own house so i could get them out of there. last time i saw such a sweet and beautiful female pitty. she was still a puppy but had grown, and she just looked at me with such sad eyes and was pushing against the barred cage to get me to pet her. it's torture to me.

This ^^, and a beware of dog sign can also be used to alert those entering the gate to take care not to let the dog loose.

I once rented a house and experienced an attempted burglary. In response I installed motion sensor lights in the front and back of the house; installed a second hasp lock to the garage door; applied Burglar Alarm stickers on every window of the house; applied an Operation Identification sticker to the front door; posted a Neighborhood Watch sign in the front window; posted No Solicitors and No Peddlers signs on front porch; AND I posted Beware of Dog signs on both gates, even though I had no dog at the time. Never had a problem after that. :laughing

Yes, I do own dogs. Big dogs. Pit mix type dogs. And as much as I completely and utterly trust my dog, I wouldn't allow some little kid to play with them unsupervised anymore than I would if I owned a pet lion. People, we need to realize these are animals. Animals can be unpredictable. Period.

The sign may certainly be an indication of a responsible owner. But it also states that you have some sort of indication that your dog may actually be something to beware of. You don't see "Beware of Hamster" signs do you? No.

Any dog can attack.

Absolutely right. The sign says, beware of the dog. You might get your ass bit if you don't. That's all it means. My dogs don't run loose. There are no little kids in my house. I won't let anyone get their kids near my dogs, not because they are vicious, but because they are big, and just turning around, will knock kids down. And people freak out. Not because I'm some big bad ass gang member (represent BARF, YO!, So-Cal Division), but because, for you own safety, stay the fuck away.

I completely agree with that. Some dogs are bad. Some are not bad but will bite if provoked. You never truly know.

beware of dogs signs reduce owners liability in case someone gets bit.

Actually, the Pres of the HOA told me that I should put up, Dog On Premises signs instead, the beware signs could show that I already knew they were aggressive/vicious and should have taken more precautions if they bite someone, possibly making me more liable. Damn litigious society. Just don't climb over the damn fence and you'll (probably) live.
