This is why we can't have nice things.....

Purchased postcholo a very nice elliptical machine for Christmas. In a display of overly-athletic exuberance, he jumps on with the power cord wrapped up around one of the foot platforms and it [the power cord] breaks completely out from the machine. Elapsed time between receiving gift and destruction of gift= 13 seconds. Sigh.

The dangling piece in the first photo broke out of the [also now broken] round plastic housing that fit into the hole shown in the second picture. No power to unit. We haven't split open the main case yet to follow these wires further inside where it's possibly dislodged further up. Neither of us have any skills or knowledge even remotely useful for this problem. The wires still seem soundly connected on the dangling part so who the f*&%# knows where the problem is.

Places specializing in repairing exercise equipment are prohibitively expensive, like $200 just to come and look and another $100 per hour for repairs. Will easily exceed total cost of machine pretty quickly.

My question for the barf peanut gallery: what other kind of [less expensive] repair person might also be able to fix a relatively minor problem like this? A computer repair person, electronics repair? Should I just leave it broken in the living room to remind Max to slow his roll? :twofinger

Seriously, it's probably as simple as finding the place it broke off or separated, and resplicing the wires. Or merely replugging it in.

My wife is an amazing repair woman. She youtube's... watches the vid and repairs stuff / installs stuff. Way more focused than her husband.

You might find something there. :dunno

I'm sorry to hear of your dilemma. I'm not the most handy person in the world----HUGE Understatement!!!

I feel like a Macho Man when I put up a shelf w/o it falling.

Budman- My Wife is the same way- she is very skilled. That's why I stick to the kitchen (I know my place).

If you have the receipt I would just take it back to where you purchased it and say it came broken like that and get a new one.

If the above seems to slimy to do then I would look at the adapter that broke and make sure you get some pictures so you can get the wire orientation correct and then I would just splice the adapter to the existing wires that are there. All it would take is a few minutes to get it up and running with a wire stripper and either wire nuts (for a hack job) or some crimpers and butt connectors.

I am pretty handy around the house so that is what I would do and it seems to me if you know someone who is handy it shouldn't be too hard to fix.

Just to clarify the elliptical display is broken not the machine itself correct? The power cord seems pretty small gauge for any kind of hefty electronics to be run off it.

if you bring it to me in the south bay and are prepared to leave it for a few weeks while i get to it, i'm sure i can make that less fucked up than it currently is, and i'll work well enough for the 3 months most new years resolutions last :twofinger

+1

if it broke so easily, it's easy to imagine that it would have worn/broken in time. Me thinks either you got a bad apple, or more likely, it's just bad design/cheap build quality. Either return for new unit, or exchange for one slightly better built.

While this offer sounds altruistic on the outset (and indeed, I've no doubt auntie could whip that machine into shape toot sweet ) I would caution storm to belay acting on that offer for a bit..... at least until the dirtbag challenge is behind us....lest monstrous modifications "accidentally" occur ;)

So, you have an engine you can install in the elliptical machine? For postcholo's health, of course!

Well
Dirtbag bike is a shaft drive, and it runs REALLY strong. Connecting it to the drive roller should be pretty easy
