Jan 10, 1901.

On this day in 1901, a drilling derrick at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas, produces an enormous gusher of crude oil, coating the landscape for hundreds of feet and signaling the advent of the American oil industry. The geyser was discovered at a depth of over 1,000 feet, flowed at an initial rate of approximately 100,000 barrels a day and took nine days to cap.

Not as fast as I look.
Was it vinyl? I know other materials had been around much longer.
Vinyl was still too expensive to succeed in wide public use, but it was used for commercial platers.

A lot of interesting coincidences on this date. :thumbup

I lived at 635 Cole at the time. That is right, despite what too many barfers think (that I am a right wing radical), I actually was a REAL hippie living in the Haight in the season of the witch, [edit] I mean love.
Barbara Streisand fucking sucks, that's why. :twofinger
It took me awhile to figure out why I liked The Cars. And it was their mastering of "empty space". They said a lot by leaving out noise in much of their music.

Indeed! I was in Big Sur at the same time. We used to come up to the Haight once a year for music. It was different then. Dope was cheaper.

You came to the city and I went to Santa Cruz and Big Sir. :laughing I still have vivid memories of two lane hwy 17 with all the ferns and Scott's Valley a huge meadow of green and mustard flowers. It was a beautiful road.

I was at that event and made it to all the free stuff in the G.G. Park, of course. Why else would I live two blocks away from Hippie Hill. :laughing Timothy Leary always made me feel stoned sober, however.. :wow

Isn’t it Civil Disobedience Day, er, Martin Luther King’s b day?
Yes, indeed. I think I started a "On this day" thread in his honor, once! :party Still a hero of mine.
