The Vaccine Thread.

I understand hardware manufacturing

The 1 limit to scale/speed/efficiency is always headcount.

Making them faster tends to require either higher paid employees or more employees. I guess other efficiencies through process are available as well but that’s fine tuning a line and not maximizing it.

I don’t know how an mRNA vaccine is developed though :dunno

Maybe we will get a "social credit rating" app like China. The app could include those that are covid safe and those who aren't. We'd be required to scan it to get in to all sorts of places. That would be awesome.

I’d be happy if voluntary declination came with a mandatory DNR/DNI/Do Not Transport order.

I will be getting mine I think on Saturday. They rolled them out today at work but I’d just left after my workweek. Looking forward to another layer of protection when I’m at work.

My buddies wife got her shot today. She's a nurse at Marin General. She also said that they figured out that they were getting more doses per vial then were advertised or whatever they call it.

NO!

This is not a real option.

All vials are loaded with more fluid in them then necessary. This is to allow for different length and gauge needles and to ensure sufficient doses. You are not allowed to draw from different vials to “create” another dose

Hard stop unless Pfizer and the FDA change protocols. Lots of reasons why this can be problematic.

This can be true, but it sounds like more automation is needed.

I got an email today at work to find out who's interested in getting vaccinated. We were told that our county office of emergency services will be distributing the vaccine and they are compiling a list of front line personnel interested in receiving it. I replied that I was interested in getting vaccinated. I don't know when that might be though.

From the Daily podcast, the price per dose was $19, with I thought that was cheap.
It would be under normal circumstances, but economy of scale and bypassing a much, much longer approval process significantly reduces costs. Plus getting the money up front doesn't hurt either with 100 Million guaranteed purchases, to start.

Big Pharma ALWAYS goes for the most money they can get, their instincts are ALWAYS predatory.

A letter to Stanford executives and signed by residents said the hospital was rolling out the vaccine to 5,000 employees in its first phase; of those, only seven residents and fellows were included.

There are 1300+ residents and fellows.

So 4,993 others, including some perm work from home staff, got the vaccine before frontline workers.

He flew to the UK to get it

EDIT: I suppose he lives in London so no travel was necessary

Understand your point though!

Shit like that is likely happening all around the country.

Lot's of good people, and lots of bad people.

They've been pretty outspoken about the why and after talking with my wife, it makes sense. The 7 that received the vaccine were "older".

A resident or a fellow is not assigned a work location so they "algorithm" didn't apply a patient facing value to them thus they got a lower risk score.

Apparently it was identified on Tuesday and while they might have been able to recalculate everyone, the logistics of administering while managing patient load would have been significant.

Sounded more like rationalization to me.

Yeah, they're younger, but they have families and they typically work way, way longer hours than long time doctors. They're also significantly run down because they're (very) cheap labor.

These first vaccines were intended for front line folks, it doesn't sound like the front line folks actually were the focus of the first round of vaccines.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I don’t disagree with you and I don’t disagree with their reasoning why.

They should have made the effort and delayed the administering until they had it right.

Sadly residents and fellows are not treated as peers.

I've heard many times that they're treated like peons or indentured slaves.

One of the many flaws of human nature is the tendency to view people according to what you're paying them rather than who and what they are, since they get paid so poorly they are treated poorly.

It's a shitty way of viewing people, I've seen it many times.

It is mandatory I get a flu shot every year per my employer. This year, everything was delayed after our clinic received the first dose of flu vaccines. This week we got an email for everyone who hadn't gotten it yet to come Thursday or Friday afternoon.

On Thursday I arrived with some coworkers for my shot, they ask if we are there for flu or covid, I respond with flu as I haven't been told when we are getting the covid even though we continue to get told we are priority (within the agency). I receive my flu shot without incident and am waiting in the parking lot for my adverse affects to kick in when my phone rings and it is the Medical Officer of the clinic asking if I can come get my covid vaccine :facepalm

Now, I can't get my covid vaccine for two weeks but due to travel, I cant get the covid vaccine until I can receive the second dose three weeks later. Since I am traveling in the middle and end of January they won't give me a two day waiver for the 21 day waiting period.

Sorry for the rant, I just wish they would have told me I could have gotten the covid vaccine on Thursday. I know I will get sooner or later but it feels like a missed opportunity, especially with upcoming travel.

didn't see any numbers yet:

2.9M vaccines were distributed (2.9M Pfizer 0 Moderna) this past week starting 12/13
7.9M vaccines will be distributed (2.0M Pfizer 5.9M Moderna) the week starting 12/20
_._M vaccines will be distributed (minimum 2.0M Pfizer _._M Moderna) the week starting 12/27

known timeline things:
-Operation Warp Speed Chief Operating Officer Gus Perna stated that 40M of vaccine will be distributed by EOY.
-Moderna ready to distribute 20M by 12/31 (looks like they'll fall behind by a week). 5.9M week starting 12/20, 14.1M by EOY

Wow, you should of had your flu shot months ago.

My guess it it will be like your Yellow Fever vaccine card/book used when traveling. Could even enter it into existing Yellow booklet/card thing.
