July 1st 2020 is NEXT summer.

:laughing

BTW, there are non official rumblings that Middlecreek/Penny Pines might open sooner than the Stonyford/Fouts Springs side. Just second hand rumors and dont hold your breath..... but might happen. :thumbup

Yup. Sometimes I get confused. Yet, there was reason.

I just called the Stony work center; Davis Flat, etc, is open, NOW. As of June 4
Trails are not.

Mo later.

I believe that the campgrounds at Davis, South Fork, Gray Pine, ect are open now, but there is no trail riding right yet... I'm hoping to go up July 4th and bring my DS to ride around on whatever forest roads are open to look around.

Where did you hear that? The forest service website still lists it as closed. Would love to be able to ride there again.

There was an article in lake county news a couple days ago. Sounds like most of the single track is still closed but a lot of 4x4
trails are open

Here is the article.

In the Upper Lake District, its just some of the trails north of Lake Pilsbury unaffected by the fires. Nothing open in the traditional riding area of Penny Pines and only the gravel novice "corral" by Middle Creek campground.

In the Stonyford Grindstone area, it is only roads and spurs to either private property or the campgrounds. Nothing of significance to ride.

Last weekend I and a Stonyford local rode from Elk Creek to Covelo and did a lot of zig zagging on FS roads up in that area. Did almost 200 miles of FS road riding and had a blast. Mendocino Pass still has snow on both sides of the road and on some of the higher roads too but all trails north of the closed fire area are free of snow. Went up to Anthony Peak fire tower and the view was spectacular as always.
Later in the day we met a great lady who is the OHV rep for the Grindstone / Stonyford area and seemed very enthusiastic about getting and keeping the area opened up as soon as possible. Her name is Sarah Chamberlin and her assistant is Paige Makowski. They both seem to be “on our side” regarding OHV usage in that area. Her contact information is 530-963-1328 and her email is Sarah.Chamberlin@usda.gov

If people want to volunteer for trail recovery / maintenance they need to be checked out first for instructions and safety first, so give her a holler. Let’s get Dirty BARF in Stonyford back on track.

there was a volunteer day recently...

Volunteers help restore recreation areas on
Grindstone Ranger District

WILLOWS, Calif., Aug. 22, 2019 – A group of volunteers signed on to some tough, dirty work last week to help clean and restore the Stonyford off-highway vehicle (OHV) area and campgrounds on the Grindstone Ranger District that burned in the 2018 Ranch Fire. During the week-long project, 32 volunteers cleared 40 miles of trail, installed 26 barriers in Mill Valley Campground, removed over 80 yards of burned barriers and rebar and installed 30 signs and trail markers. The volunteers contributed a total of 196 hours

Grindstone OHV Program Manager Sarah Ridenour-Chamberlin said, “It’s hard work but very satisfying to know that we are making a difference for future generations to enjoy this area.” Grindstone District Ranger Christine Hill added, “The volunteers did an outstanding job and we are very appreciative of their hard work. Thank you all so much.”

The Ranch Fire is the largest wildland fire in California history at 410,203 acres; around 288,000 acres are on the Mendocino National Forest. The fire burned through the southern portion of the Forest damaging the entire OHV trail system, destroying or compromising culverts and bridges and impacting campgrounds, day use areas, trailheads and signage.

Elk Mountain Rd (M-1) is open to Lake Pilsbury. Penny Pines is open for camping but the trais remain closed.

Penny Pines was saved and the campground looks unscathed! :banana

There is an enormous amount of logging going on, the next area out for bid is Deer Creek Meadow.

They have not updated the map since the 19th. My impression is that a lot of the black diamond trails ARE open since the Stony off road groups have been working hard. No real info other than hearsay :dunno
