Dammit, I'm finding some good shit online again... gotta put the word out!!!

(this is not a 'favorite music' thread... this is 'music you just now discovered that you think is pretty cool')

The Dining Rooms - You (from 'Tre') - nifty latin samba meets trip-hop

Rippingtons - Nature of the Beast (from 'curves ahead') - downtempo smooth jazz with a lot of good interplay between guitar and sax, with a lot of rather lush arrangements behind the whole thing

Supreme Beings of Leisure - You're Always the Sun (from SBL first album) - funky bass beat and guitar work meets house mixology, good vocalist

The Dixie Dregs - Ice Cakes (from 'what if') - jean-luc ponty style violin meets jazz backing section and walter becker-esque guitar pickin'. sounds like a jam session in some dive bar in soho. or maybe aspen. oh yes, they recruited jan hammer for the keyboards too, sounds like.

Morcheeba - Shoulder Holster (from 'Big Calm') - sultry torch singer meets Massive Attack style drum n bass downtempo. if you're not stoned before you put this on, you probably will feel stoned by the time the song ends.

Thus ends the Deacon's playlist sample for the evening. NEXT!

If you like that morcheeba get the older one- it's the best and just amazing.

supreme beings of leisure..funky and fun. reminds me of boogie buffet @ 1015 Folsom 10+ years ago. Uh..10? More? Ouch.

A lot of the music on this site is old but if you haven't heard it it's new to you!
try this:
http://www.epitonic.com/genres/downtempo.html
don't be affraid to skip ahead on a tracks that blow or just try the 'radio' feature.

Porcupine Tree (dark poppy prog rock)

of course if anyone has a desire to go way to far.....

SailorMoon Musicals, I have CDs and VHS.

I discovered The Dining Rooms about this time last year. Two more I found about the same time are "Tosca" and "Quantic". They're similar, and pretty damn cool.

Anyone caught badmouthing jazz will be shot on site!

I'll have to revisit the Rippingtons. The last time I checked in on them, they were doing LLLAAAAAAAMMMME smooth jazz crap. There's a fine line between good Downtemp/Acid Jazz and shite Smooth Jazz, IMHO.

Lately, I've been listening the crap out of the Afro-Cuban All-Stars eponymous album. Found out about them because my employer put on a huge Cuban art/culture exhibition which included having the ACASs coming and playing a concert. (Didn't get to see it though)

Been intermixing with The Herbalizer: Something Wicked This Way Comes, which a good friend turned me on to.

And while it's neither new, nor new to me, I'm still stuck on listening to Mahavishnu Orchestra's: Inner Mounting Flame.

Deeter, they still do the whole smooth jazz gig. if you didn't care for it before, don't bother, they haven't changed much.

but I like Russ's guitar work, got to see them in concert once back in CO, so.... (shrug)

umm...slight thread bastardization......

one of my favorite old tapes was dj jeno: bang the drum. Anyone have this on cd or mp3 that could help me out with a 'backup copy?" I bought it originally but I fear it's been swallowed up by one of the mystery boxes in the garage. Can't find it anywhere.

Lately, it's all Latin Pop:

Cafe Tacuba
Julieta Venegas
La Mosca Tse Tse
Intocable
Mana

Yo Billery if you like Latin Pop, you might like a band out of Paris called Sargent Garcia. They're a mix of Parisians and South American. They combine Reggaeton, HipHop and Salsa. French/spanish language. Very Hip. First CD is better than the seccond.

Also, there's a hip little electronica band out of london called Sidestepper. They're a mix of Columbian and English. A VERY cool band that also mixes electronica with Salsa y mas. They come to SF frequently, at The Independence. Their first CD is better than their second as well.
