Several weeks back we were out in the dinghy checking the docks and came across this :wtf:

It was on its side and our first thought was STOLEN!
A friendly nudge, nudge, wink, wink at the local burrito shop revealed that NOPE no DOJ stop on that baby.

We went to bed that evening a little sad and confused. An ATK 605 is a beast a production works bike if there ever was one. Yeah, old by today's standards but not a bike that should be on its side on a dilapidated dock in the No-man's land zone of the San Rafael Canal.
We finally left a note.

About a week later we got a voice mail "Hi, this is (owner) and it's there because it don't run and I owe you money?"

No clue but with nothing to lose played phone tag for a couple of weeks. We agreed to forgive a forgotten debt and grab the ATK not knowing its condition. Great, now off to DMV to make sure it's really this guys bike to give away.
Yep, no problem, just pay the thousand of past due registration and penalties :mad

Decided to walk away. But there it was, on its side, on a beat to hell island of an old dock, getting swamped every time a big boat went by :cry

The DMV was able to reduce the penalties to under $1000 so last Tuesday we pulled the dock around to a ramp and:

Thank you TOM (OFG) for the carrier.

Initial inventory of condition:
Complete with the exception of skid plate. Brakes frozen, clutch frozen, and some of the typical ATK stuff seavoyage outlined in his ATK thread.

Just wondering if you can kick start a 600cc thumper and is it a bit tall? My XR600 gives me fits at times...

You know this girl Woodschick? I been talking to her....
There will be mods.

As for kick starting? Hell no! It has a little red button :party

After about a 4hour cleanup job the condition is surprising :party

The oil is clean and appears not to be contaminated.

Flushed out the brake system (fluid looked and smelled fresh) and the Brembos seem to be operational. The pads are in like new condition and the rotors cleaned up revealing no pits :banana

phase 1 of brake cleane up. When I pull the wheels for the new tires I will use some fine stainless wool and really clean them up. For now the pad surface area is free from pits and that's a big deal!

Very pleased that with just a mild detergent the Talon hubs cleaned up to new :thumbup

The owner had reported that the bike was very "surgey" and would cut out and then come back at full throttle.

When we pulled the tank we noticed some chafing on the inner tank surface.
A closer look revealed the ignition wire chafed through and in sporadic contact with the frame:

Useful idiot
Subscribed. Great write-up so far, G. That is a FANTASTIC bike, and I can't wait to see it live. Ok, I can't wait to throw a leg over it for a few minutes. I promise not to lowside it. I can't promise not to loop it, though. It has about the same amount of power as my DR250, right? ;)
