I was cruising around 80 MPH Saturday night on HWY 80 somewhere between Vacaville and Fairfield. CHiP pulls next to me and as far as I can tell gives me a warning to slow down:

If you're here, thanks for the warning!

It did leave me wondering how best to handle a freeway in that state, though. I pulled into #2 and dropped down to 70 or so and immediately started being passed on all sides constantly. In #1 we were all spread out, my left had no lane, and my right was mostly clear.

What's the best tradeoff between safety and ticket exposure when all traffic is moving at a fast clip?

Thanks!

did you notice him gaining on you?

try and keep an eye on vehicles approaching from behind, i've found that if i notice LEO approaching and i move over well in advance they won't pull you over. well unless you already got tagged :twofinger

Been there
This situation reminds me of a funny story. I was on my morning commute south 101 in Marin going about 80ish in the #1 lane, I back off throttle and change lanes to exit when all of the sudden the sneaky CHP moto pulls up right next to me and points to the shoulder as to pull over. So I follow, exit with him to the light and he then proceeds to pull next to the car at the light. I'm like WTF so I pull up next to CHP and ask if wanted to talk to me, he then gives me a weird look and shakes his head no and continues talking to driver. I shit you not this was straight out of the movie Super Troopers.

I always thought that if the flow of traffic is going faster than posted speed limit, the po-po can pull anyone he/she chooses out, no?

I would stay in the #2 lane, and flow with that. #2 lane is one of the safer lanes, and tends to flow slower than the fast lane. The right lane is terrible.

Then, you just takes your chances, but at least you're not the stand out hot dog in front.

Stunning he accelerated to above 80 on their Harley's...

It's weird. I saw a Harly on an onramp, considered preparing to wave, then figured we'd never cross paths because he/she was too far back.

15 seconds later this happened.

It definitely caught me off guard. I should have been more aware.

Best trade off? Move to the far right and go 65mph would be my suggestion.

Kind of a bummer to have to cruise in the merge crossfire for hours.

That's my understanding of it too.

I'll try going with this. It's how I usually roll in a car, I just like not having traffic on my left when on a moto.

I don't know meow you think he was trying to pull you over if he didn't turn on his red light.

Lane 2 looked empty. Could he simply have been saying "you are in the overtaking lane"?

Yes, that could be the case.

Looking back at the longer video, #2 was clear next to me for quite a while.

I just tend to like to hang in #1 on the bike because it's one less lane to have to worry about. I guess I'll have to change that habit.

Edit: I also like to think that he might have just been giving me a thumbs up...

Consider- if you are in the left lane and something appears in front (or behind) you, you have but one option. Being over a lane or two gives you avoidance options.

I've been "shown the door" with the 7 point star before, rolling 101 thru Marin Co.
Even though the pavement is usually smoother in the fast lane, still gotta keep track of what is overtaking.

I've had CHP officers in cars flash me with their side lights several times when going a bit faster than I should have been. Always appreciate that instead of getting pulled over.

me too, although my wife hates it when i get warnings since she never does.

she thinks that cops have it out for her, white female driving bmw :rofl

i say 'warnings show you are close to the line, citation shows you crossed it'

do officers give more warnings to one gender over the other? there's inherent bias in the fact when leo looks at me i usually look like them in that i'm a white male. does that predispose me to a stern wag of the finger?

please note that i am not in any way trying to bite the hand that feeds :thumbup:laughing:ride

Mostly there is no way to tell your skin tone on a motorcycle, unless you are wearing open-face helmet or shorts and t-shirt. Even gender is tough at times.

Maybe your wife is just reckless. Plus BMW - duh!

You are correct, although you assume that the officer has decided whether to warn before hitting the red light. I neglected to mention that my warnings come after the red light pops and ensuing 'introduction'.

Can you be recklessly negligent? :laughing I have to keep my mouth shut when my wife drives and I am in the car. She gets the tickets but I crash the cars :wtf
