Will he drop the suit if they can pronounce his new kid’s name properly?

This!!!

He's not moving, he's playing poker. His vaunted company is going under without production, and he's desperate. Despite being a multibillionaire, he is in a huge cash crunch. He's pledge a good part of his stock as loan collateral. If he sells any, he could lose control of the company. He is literally broke and selling his homes. He's worth a ton of money on paper, but it's all leveraged and none of it is cash. China has slowed/stopped Tesla production and it's a miracle the stock price is still that high. It won't be if this keeps up.

Edit: He bought that plant originally for less than $100 million. It would take a few billion to replicate it in Texas, and many many months. He doesn't have months. He has weeks.

I wonder what would've become of people like him if they tried this shit during WWII's shut downs. Perhaps he would've retooled his business to produce something that is actually needed (say...ventilators, perhaps?) instead of automobiles. If the big three can figure it out, I'm sure he's smart enough to do the same instead of kicking sand and pouting.

I'll believe it when it actually happens. $10 says it's just Musk whining and posturing to what he hopes is a sympathetic Bay Area audience. Shit, he probably sells more of his vehicles in this area than anywhere else in the world. You think they'd want him to leave?

Rolls with it...

FDR used the threat of nationalization, and even nationalized Montgomery Ward...

FLCL?
Well he says they will move HQ, and "future programs", whatever the fuck that means, to Texas. The Fremont plant removal is the threat for the future "depending on how Telsa is treated".

Honestly he might actually move HQ. He doesn't seem to be completely in touch with reality. Who knows how many will decide to move to Texas. I suspect most engineers, etc will get different jobs here in Bay Area.

What jobs?

Tesla’s operations supported over 51,000 jobs in California. Tesla directly employed 20,189 workers while another 31,424 were ultimately supported by Tesla’s local supply chain purchases and its employees’ consumer activity. Thus, for every Tesla employee, another 1.5 jobs were supported in California.

• Tesla paid its employees a total of $2.1 billion in wages and equity in FY2017. Every employee is given equity upon hire.

Well as I said if employees stay here then consumer activity will continue. You are assuming all will move to Texas. I highly doubt it.
Suppliers? That depends. Fremont factory remains here for now so those suppliers will still have those contracts. Even if they move it doesn't necessarily mean they will be able to replace those suppliers.
He is talking about HQ itself. The disruption to local businesses that support the building operation will depend on how long it will seat empty.

OK, cool they paid 2.1billion in wages and equity. Is that for global operation or just bay area, and more specifically work at HQ? Most companies offer equity. So not sure what the point is.

In the end it comes down to how many direct employees for HQ decide to relocate out of Bay Area and how many decide to remain here. I don't know it, you don't know it. So overall impact to local economy is unknown.

get it while it's easy
his biggest motivation is probably that the real estate his plant is sitting on is worth more than it is.

It will be interesting to see if it’s a power play or just another company leaving California for Texas.

He should go. Texas will give up lots in taxes to make up the difference in the cost of the plant.
