Suggestions for carrying a a spare shield?

The last couple of weekends have been filled with awesome rides, but a couple of times I have finished in the dark. Not a big deal, except I am leaving in full sun with a mirrored shield which is doing me no favors after dark. I don't like wearing glasses under my helmet although clear glasses would be an easy thing to carry. I also am not a big fan of wearing glasses with the shield up. What I would prefer is to have my clear shield on the bike to switch out once the light dims. I have a tail bag but it is the dry-bag variety so sticking a face shield in it and cinching the bag to the tail is not the greatest set up.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

They fit nicely around your side under your jacket. I've done it in a one piece...not the most awesome, but it worked and wasn't really uncomfortable.

Something like this, straps around your waist/above the hips. No extra bag needed, you won't even know it's there.

This is what I used to do. Slid it in the liner of my jacket on my right side, right around my kidney.

+1 I have one of those, and I agree, you forget you're wearing it. Keeps the shield scratch free also.

You could also get a photochromic (transitions) shield. I finally got to try mine (Shoei RF-1200) and it works well (clear to light smoke and back). I have one for my Bell as well but I haven't tried it yet.

It's not cheap (~2x) and apparently wears out (store in dark) and transitions slower when it's cold.

I recently got one of those helmets with the second/internal retractable sun visor for those situations - it's amazing! I feel like I've wasted so much time switching visors over the years now and it's so convenient to drop it down (or up) with changing conditions.

Otherwise, I use a Shield Sak which is very similar to Ezekiel's visor bag. I wear it across one shoulder and under the opposing arm. It basically doesn't exist that way while you're riding.

I have that carrier bag thing and its crap, doesn't fit any of my visors in it. So I just use a long soft tube sock and put it inside my jacket around my belly. If you have a 6pack you may be too cut and break it but my keg fits it perfectly as the visor flexs to the correct shape.

Clean tube sock. Srs. That's how I've been transporting my spare shields for years. :afm199

Yep, same here - covers the shield and you can pack it away in a backpack and not worry about scratches.

I keep mine in my tankbag as a spare, the curve of it wraps around the front part of the tankbag nicely.

Another, maybe unpopular suggestion, is switch from the mirrored shield to a light smoke. I have been using the Shoei light smoke visors on my RF1100 and 1200 for years, and they're great in daylight and offer decent visibility at night - it's not ideal but it will work.

+2 on the above. I've been doing the same for years, tucked up against the curved rear portion of my tank bag. Carry three different shades on multi day trips with one on the helmet.

Turn the tube socks inside out so that the little loops don't snag on the corners and edges of the shield.

I use a motrax shield carrier very similar to the shield sak, but I wear mine over my left shoulder a la a "Gladiator" :) the top edge of the shield is closest to my neck and the strap goes under my right arm.

I can't carry it the way the others have described (around the waist or upper side) When I move around on the bike is has a tendency to dig in and/or shift while I'm riding no matter how I position it.

If I wear it over my left shoulder, its outside of my jacket and can't be felt at all, plus it has this rather interesting road warrior look which is funny.

what brand helmets?

i have an older motrax one will fit the rf1000 shields just fine, but the scorpion or rf1100/1200 shields are too big. the newer "trackside" branded bag is larger, and fits the 1100/1200 and scorpion shields just fine.

I picked up a Trackside shield bag at Cycle Gear yesterday and it is more than big enough to fit my RF1200 shield. Thanks for the input everyone, I'm ready for darkness!

I used to carry my spare non mirrored shield in my tank bag, to case, or backpack in that sling pictured earlier.

Then I bought a helmet with a retractable smoke visor built in and wonder3d why I did that for so long. Its so much less hassle.
